Biol 002: Cellular Basis of Life 👽

This is a course about two things:

  1. investigating the emergence of life on Earth, and
  2. understanding the fundamental components of life that all of us living organisms share

Human beings have long sought answers to questions like, Why are we here? What is "here" exactly? Where did we come from? What does it mean to be alive? How does my body do this life thing, anyway? Carl Sagan once said, "If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe." In this course, we are going to learn about life by first inventing the universe. We will start with the Big Bang, and the important events that paved the way for our home planet. We'll discuss Earth and its formation, and the features that make it ideal for the evolution of complex life. We will spend the bulk of our time examining the various theories of how living organisms emerged from the prebiotic chemistry of early Earth, using this as a lens through which to discuss the cellular basis of life and its evolution. My hope is that by the end of this course, you will have a richer understanding and appreciation of our home planet, and the deep ties that bind us to all the organisms that have ever lived on it.

This repo contains the source for the Spring 2022 Cellular Basis of Life course website. This digital course "textbook" was built using the R package bookdown.

Reproduction Typo

There is a small typo

In this experiment, as opposed to our dihyrbid cross experiment,

I fixed this in the following pull request #8

Phrasing is a little bit confusing.

The following statement is a little confusing:

First, all the DNA that makes up your entire genome exists within every single cell in your entire body.
That means there is A LOT of DNA in your body; I’ve read enough to stretch from here to the sun (93 million miles), and then to Pluto and back.

In particular, the part that says "I've read enough" could mean that you have read a lot of material in reference to the aforementioned fact. But I think what you are actually saying is that you have seen it in literature somewhere (the aforementioned fact) and are also saying that there is "enough" DNA to stretch from the Earth to the Sun, then to Pluto and then back.

Question about percents

In chapter 1 (https://github.com/ledelaney/biol002/blob/main/01-birth.Rmd#L19), we see
represents only five percent of the matter contained in the universe. We know the most about this kind of matter, because, well, we can see it, and touch it, and also we _are_ it. Yet nearly 85 percent of the matter in the universe

Should 85% be 95% or is the five percent in the previous line the part that is incorrect?
