Overkill for Mac

Twitter: @KrauseFx License

Introduction

Overkill is a simple, elegant Mac app, that runs in the background and makes sure iTunes never interrupts your work. And for those movie nights where you actually want to use iTunes, just click on Pause Overkill and enjoy the evening.

If you have other apps you don’t want to launch automatically (e.g. Photos app), you can add those apps to the Overkill list as well.

overkill-for-mac's Issues

App won't open

The app won't open. The first warning window pops up and gives option of open or cancel. I click open and nothing happens. Music App launches dozens of times a day.

I tried this app on another laptop with same OS and it worked fine. Thoughts?

Crashes when trying to monitor App Store

Overkill crashes when I try to add App Store to the monitored app list

  1. Open overkill
  2. Go to preferences
  3. Click + to add a new app to the list
  4. Select App Store
  5. 💥

Also

  • When I open overkill again, App Store is not on the monitored applications list
  • Same behavior happens when App Store is either closed or opened

EDIT:

Same behavior happens for other Apple Apps like Activity Monitor and AirPort Utility

App won't launch - illegal hardware instruction

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports)
Version 11.6.1 (20G224)
2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3

I installed via both Brew and the direct download link. Both produce the same situation. When you click on the app I get the initial warning about launching an app from Github. But then it closes. Any further attempt to launch the app is unsuccessful. When I attempted to run it from command line I get:

gorf@a483e79bebab ~ % /Applications/Overkill.app/Contents/MacOS/Overkill
zsh: illegal hardware instruction /Applications/Overkill.app/Contents/MacOS/Overkill

I tried to run "trace" on the app, but it produced the error "WARNING: One or more duplicate entries found in your codefiles, which will lead to unpredictable decoding behavior. Re-run with -v for more info" so apparently it isn't as easy as it is on Linux. Happy to troubleshoot this with some guidance. I suspect #25 is probably the same thing.

There are a number of other pages reporting similar errors with the illegal hardware instruction.

Indicate via icon change that a monitored app tried to launch

A subtle & temporary change to the icon would let the user remember why iTunes isn't launching for that one time in 1,000 that they actually wanted it on screen. Additionally, it would work nicely with Bartender app to pop it to the front so the user can take action on it easily.

Can't disable "start at login" option

Hi,

great tool, thank you for your effort. Here is what I found:

Can't disable "start at login" option. Steps:

  • I uncheck from preferences and close preferences screen,
  • Click on app icon from status bar, "start at login" option is still checked,
  • when I restart my Mac, it started at login

Timer for Overkill

Can you add a timer to set before we start overkill and continue to block even if I quit from Overkill ? I'm using Overkill as a self control app, like blocking Whatsapp, Telegram, Mail when I'm working.

Thanks.

Itunes starts up on macOS Catalina 10.15.7 (19H2)

Hi,
The app is launched, and overkill is not paused - iTunes has no trouble to start up.

Can we get this fixed?

Cheers,
Paweł

EDIT:
Sorry I see now that app identifier changed to

com.apple.Music
