This repository includes solutions and notes to Townsend's A Modern Approach to Quantum Mechanics 2nd edition. The solutions are to supplement those on https://kevinshuang.com/projects/a-modern-approach-to-quantum-mechanics/, which covers the solutions to the 1st edition of the book (allow me to express gratitude towards his work). As I am an ongoing self-learner of this subject, my solutions are prone to mistakes. I will try to update this repository in synchrotron with my self-study pace. If you identify a mistake in this repository or consider this repository to violate certain rules, please contact me and I will make changes in accordance.

Solutions and Notes to A Modern Approach To Quamtum Mechanics 2nd edition by Townsend

Solutions

Each solution is contained in a separate folder named by chapters under the big folder "Solution". There are many files in each chapter folder, but most of them are not useful (working files). For my solution, see the .pdf file; for the LaTeX file, see the .tex file; other files are automatically created when compling the .tex file in VSCode and may not be useful.

This book is a popular quantum mechanics textbook. However, there are no publicly available solution manuals (they are available to instructors only). Though understanding the intent to avoid plagiarism, I find it difficult to learn this subjet without the opportunity to check my answers as a self-learner. Thankfully, I find Huang's post on https://kevinshuang.com/projects/a-modern-approach-to-quantum-mechanics/ which have solutions to the 1st edition of the textbook. However, there are additional questions in the 2nd edition and the question indexes are slightly different as a result. Therefore, I would like to share my answers to the uncovered questions and link the question index in the second edition to those in the first edition, in order to help users of the second edition textbook. If any individual or party find this repository to harm its rights, please contact me and I would make corresponding changes.

Three parts are included in each solution file.

  1. Suggested problems for reviewing: For each chapter, I included a few (no more than 10) problems for reviewing purposes. The problems typically reflect a procedure that can be used to solve a lot of related problems and can serve as a good aid of reviewing.
  2. Correspondence of problem indexes in the 2nd edition and those in the 1st edition.
  3. Solutions to the uncovered problems in Huang's solution.

Notes

I also include some notes (far from a complete study note). These are generally some confusions/thoughts I have during reading or some mathematical deductions that are worth noting down that may not present in the textbook (or are not quite understandable to me in the textbook). These are mostly for my personal reference and may include a lot of strange or incorrect things.
