Eye Dropper and Color picker extension for Google Chrome
Home Page: https://eyedropper.org
Quite often I'm finding myself comparing similar colors on a web page. Since colors are only added if they are not already in the history it's difficult to find which colors I have just selected.
A solution would be to make it possible to see recent selections in chronological order. Alternatively recently selected colors could be marked in some way (e.g. a thicker bottom border).
Thanks for the good work kepi, I use this extension a lot and it's very useful.
Hello,
I was wondering if manifest_version 2 is in the roadmap? I am trying to use this great extension to build another tool, but I ran into challenges with the manifest version as Google is not allowing new extensions of manifest version 1.
Google will soon remove support for it completely in Jul and Aug timeframe: http://developer.chrome.com/extensions/manifestVersion.html
I was trying to make the relevant changes by updating manifest.json, moving all scripts to external .js files, and moving inline calls (such as onload="init()") as a Listener.
However, I had challenges with the flatter dependency as that is an inline script dynamically injected. The new Content Security Policies do not seem to support inline scripts. I will continue to explore but if you are already working on manifest version 2 then I can stand by (or try to help).

No matter how many times I click the color picker when I am on Gmail, it doesn't seem to work.
I am using Chrome version 27.0.1448.0 dev-m / Windows 8
The console gives this error:
Uncaught TypeError: Type error

Hi-
On most pages "Pick color from website" does not function at all. I click the button but the color picker (eye dropper) never comes up. On the rare occasions it does work it seems to get confused when there are multiple tabs open.
Great little plug in when it works but has been really buggy for about 2 months.
Thanks for looking into it-
Hover css and animations kick in sometimes making it impossible to pick the color of certain page elements in their 'natural' state. It would be interesting if you could hold a modifier key to 'freeze' the state of the webpage so that hover evens will NOT trigger (like holding the CTRL key).
I would think a possible solution would be to overlay a transparent div across the entire page.
Some websites change the color of the text in the lower right corner preview box; presumably this is an issue with a shared class or id name, or potentially a sharing of header styles.
Try using this extension on the website beautybodywellness.com

When I activate "GPU Accelerated Canvas 2D" in "about:flags", it can take 10-20 seconds for the eye dropper to appear after I click the "Pick color from webpage" button.
It's not a critical issue, since thats still experimental, but Google is planning on making it default to on soon. Thank you for an amazing tool!
Josh
To activate "GPU Accelerated Canvas 2D":
Try to choose different border color (oposite) when moving above dark colors.
I want to be able to build a palette from a website, then export all of the colors at once, instead of having to copy and paste each individual one. I'm not really picky about the export format--even TXT would be okay--but it's really important to be able to export all colors with a few clicks.
Since you're making use of a history feature, it would be nifty if you could select multiple colors on the page at a time, and then go review them. What if you could hold down (or toggle with) [SHIFT] while picking colors so it doesn't immediately deactivate. You can select multiple colors and then hit shift again before choosing your last color or just exit colorpicker mode.
When I choose "pick color from webpage", the addon will change the cursor like it should, and sometimes it seems to pick the color, often it picks no color (and has a little black square icon), and sometimes it picks random colors. I tried it with Windows XP on the same web pages, and it worked well.
Unfortunately, I do all my development on the Linux system. :(
Access to local files isn't possible now because of strict security policy from Google. Extension shouldn't access to file:///
There is solution for this while I will sign some papers for Google but I'm not sure if there will be long check from google before every commit...
Shorthand hex codes e.g. #fff don't work.
When viewing image directly (i.e. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/O-ZKkLEl6E1dsTjeMJ1dLFSF6QRowOJO0l39gbBAv29ie6c7mpHmO3GljhDeDH8DrpVOrj0HOVE=s32-e365-h32) it doesn't show picker box and cursor icon etc.
when i click the extention button, the color pickup popup layer is opened painfully slowly.
my env:
chrome 5.0.375.38 beta
MacBook OSX 10.5.8 (Intel)
It doesn't work right on pages with multiple frames. Usually colors are good in top-left frame and bad in others.
Chrome for Mac came out of beta today and the tool doesn't seem to work on this version.
I did enable "Automaticaly copy picked color to clipboard when picking from webpage" but there's nothing in my clipboard. I'm using Arch Linux and Chromium 16
The eyedropper is only picking shades of gray, black and white. It won't register any colors.
I currently use the SuperChromePass extension. This has a keyboard shortcut of CTRL+SHIFT+P which also brings up the Eyedropper. It would be nice to be able to modify the keyboard shortcut to something else.
while page is zoomed, tool picks colors like there is no zoom at all.
99% of the time I use the Eyedropper tool to copy a colour from a webpage into Photoshop. However, the way it currently copies the hex code with the '#' symbol in front of it, you can't paste it directly into Photoshop's Colour Picker field.
I used to use ColorZilla for Firefox and this had an option to include or exclude the '#' symbol when copying a colour code. This would be an extremely useful feature in chromeEyeDropper, as at the moment I have to paste the code into a text editor, then copy and paste the actual hex code into Photoshop, which is a hassle.
In the Hex code area there is 8 characters the first 6 are the right color code then it is trailed by "ff"
When you zoom the page, it just does not work.
Add option to change cursor to crosshair instead of classic pointer.
I just thought this would be a logical simple addition. Adding this line after line 137 will cause a mouse right-click to disable the dropper (an alternative to hitting esc).
case 93: page.dropperDeactivate(); break;
Allow to copy color without # on options page
It is not much user friendly that there is need to reload every page for first time after extension installation to make pick from webpage work.
Would like to be able to set "pick from web page" as the default behaviour.
Once set, clicking the icon would automatically select the colour picker cursor
and let you select from the active page.
i can't use in fedora14. reponse nothing

I've disabled all other extensions, and definitely narrowed it down to this one. Whatever it does, it's affecting the page rendering.
Hello!
I noticed in MAC OSX, it tends to be very slow in loading. There's at least a 1~3 sec lag before it pops up when I click on the button. Also, there should be a function to automatically have the color be in your clipboard.

When I click the icon in the top bar, I would like to be in eyedropper mode right away, as opposed to the large dialog w/ the color picker gizmo. That's why I have the icon in the browser after all. I could use some other tool if I want a complex gizmo (e.g. gimp).
The "Pick color from webpage" feature doesn't work.
The square box does not match up with the cursor position when picking colors from a webpage. I can't select colors from the very top, bottom, and corners.
Problem:
When attempting to sample colors from an open image in Chrome, the extension merely does not allow me to select a color.
Steps to reproduce:
1.) Load an image or non-http page (i.e. file:///) in Chrome in a tab
2.) Open up the chromeEyeDropper panel via the extension's button
3.) Click on "Pick color from webpage"
Notice how it does not change the cursor on moving it over the page.
Solution:
Allow the extension to sample colors from image 'pages' and non-http pages.
i find myself zooming in a lot on web pages to select exactly the pixels i want (think gradients). this extension gets all wacky when you do that. i can barely tell where it's sampling from since it's definitely not sampling from the crosshairs or the tip of the pointer. please fix!
report from comments: it is overlaping with some content on webpages 4 example here http://www.visualizetraffic.com/show/addthis.com
I've noticed a problem when I'm using the color picker. When I selected some colors, the result doesn't match with the original one. Ex. White, light red, light yellow etc...
That's the case for the half of the table.
It's a shame, because it's a very helpful tool.
Thank's.
Picking colors is easy, but then I have to move mouse over, drag to select the color code, then press some combination of keys in order to get the color into the clipboard. I'd love it if there was a "copy to clipboard" button for the selected color.
Maybe even an option to auto-copy the color code too, so I can paste immediately after picking.
The ability to quickly copy the RGB values to clipboard
The little square that is supposed to be the eyedropper hovers UNDER the target div, probably because the target is at a higher z-index than the picker.
Title says it all. When I choose a red color like (#c51d1d) from a webpage, I often want to edit it. When I go to Color Picker, it shows a grey color. Looks like the slider is a bit off on the bottom.
Also, you'll see this error if you grab the slider and slide it all the way to the top or the bottom of the scale. It automatically turns everything into greyscale.
When scroll to bottom of screen, sometime picker shows only black color.
