adobe-alternatives's Issues

New Amazing After Effects Alternative

Please, please, please add Autograph by Left Angle to the list for After Effects alternatives! It is honestly the first TRUE alternative to AE. I've been a professional AE user for several years and Autograph is phenomenal and very promising. It is essentially exactly like how you would WANT After Effects to work and they are actively updating it and listening to feedback from it's users. If you know how to use AE, most of the main functions and workflows are the same. Plus they offer both subs AND permanent license options. I feel this is an extremely important addition for motion graphics designers, VFX artists, and compositors. As a professional that has been using AE for small and large clients, Autograph is a must for the future of these designers.

[AfterEffects alternative] Apple Motion

Apple also makes a compositing/effects/motion graphics software as part of its Final Cut suite though I have never used it and I'm not sure where exactly it should be categorized so I didn't want to make a PR for it. Maybe someone who knows more about it can comment on whether it's suitable and where.

https://www.apple.com/final-cut-pro/motion/

Also the website is a bit confusing as it's listed as part of Final Cut Pro and the buy button on the top right links to Final Cut Pro but it's a separate software and the "Buy Motion" link correctly points to its AppStore page.

Tested Mac Versions of Pixel Apps: These Don't Work

I tested these applications for Mac under Pixel Art. I will list the ones that don't work, are broken, or are incorrectly labeled

ProMotionNG actually isn't a Mac app. It can be run in Wine, but that's true of all the other software listed here. Maybe an icon for Wine could be created? I don't think it should be listed as a Mac app because that's misleading and confusing

Pixelorama doesn't work on Mac. It crashes

Also, I found a pretty good Pixel art application called Pixelmator Pro! It's paid with a 7 day free trial. Link here: https://www.pixelmator.com/pro/free-trial/

There's also Seashore, which I haven't tried in many years but it looks like there's a newer version that's free and Open Source: https://github.com/robaho/seashore

Suggestion: add Krita as top option for photoshop replacement

As both a digital artist and photographer I've spent a lot of time in image applications and can confidently say that Krita is better than GIMP or any other open source image editor I've found for both Image Editing and Digital Artwork. If you haven't used it yet give it a try, it's very feature rich.

Suggestion to add InstaMAT

InstaMAT came out earlier this year and can be a replacement for both Substance Designer and Painter.
There's a free version for those making less than $100k/yr using their software and a perpetual version for those who are making more than 100k/yr.
https://instamaterial.com/

There is no Linux version of Quixel Mixer

You can only select Windows or Mac on their download page, and Google doesn't seem to find any mention of a Linux version.

(Also, the last release was in 2022, so it has most likely been killed by Epic.)

Synfig is not browserbased

Synfig is not browserbased it is in the list: Synfig (Browser)
We can see from the Page: Open-source 2D Animation Software for Windows, Linux and MacOS
Distribution it is done by gumroad, that needs a email, for 0 $ options include MacOs, Linux\Windows for 32\64 and Windows Portable 32\64.

The list should be changed
Synfig (Max,Win,Linux, needs eMail address)

Sugestion to replace armorpaint with Blender+ucupaint addon

I've followed development of armorpaint since the beginning and it's been abandoned for a long time, it's laggy, clumsy, incredibly limited, lacking basic features, and all-around just not a viable option if you want to actually texture anything.

Alternative that does actually work is just using Blender's texture painting kit and shader nodes enhanced by the ucupaint addon (free), which adds curvature, occlusion, light bakes, layers, and layer adjustments to give a much more complete and easy to use toolset.

Suggestion to add Unreal Engine

With the recent 5.4 update, Unreal Engine adds motion design tools to their editor and can be an alternative to After Effects.

Pricing is free if making less than $1 million USD in annual gross revenue.

Windows, Mac and Linux

Aseprite is not open source :(

The licence for Aseprite doesn't meet the Open Source Definition. It would be better described as “source available”.
I wish that was just pedantic labeling.

The licence does not allow re-distribution, which means that if the project switches to an unaffordable licence, it'll only be legal to run:

  • existing copies, and
  • apps compiled from source, if you personally obtained the code before the switch.

The point of open source is that if something bad happens, the community can “fork” the existing version and continue maintaining it (e.g. port it to a new OS or add a new feature, and freely share the improvement with others). Aseprite only allows modifications “for your own personal purpose or to propose a contribution”, and they can reject contributions.

IANAL.

iZotope RX is not free

iZotope RX has been put down as a free of charge product when it is in-fact a paid product. Cheapest tier being $64.

Unless you are counting the free trial as a free of charge product. I apologise.

Photomator as Lightroom alternative

Photomator by the Pixelmator Team is a solid Lightroom alternative—I vouch for it after converting to it after 6 years of doing professional photography work on Lightroom. Admittedly, Photomator is still lacking quite a few key features, but the Pixelmator team has been actively updating it, making it more and more on par with Lightroom.

[Suggestion] Add GrafX2

With a new shiny pixel art section GrafX2 is an old player in the scene worth mentioning!
Starting development in the late 90's it is a Deluxe Paint inspired indexed color painting program heavily tailored for pixel art. Sports some neat features like Lua scripting, non-square pixel modes and emulation of display limitations from some early home computers
GPLv2 licensed, http://grafx2.chez.com/

Add Okular for pdf Reader (Acrobat alternative)

Okular is a free and open source pdf viewer with the following notable features (atleast for me)

  • On Linux and Windows
  • Reads PDF, EPub, DjVU MarkDown, JPEG, PNG, GIF, Tiff, WebP, CBR, CBZ etc... file formats.
  • Review mode (annotations (highlight, text, stamps, freehand draw))
  • Change page colors to any dark and light colors you choose
  • Digital signature support
  • Right click drag screenshot
  • Like all kde apps, the ability to bind nearly every clickable button to a keyboard shortcut

Add Inkscape as an InDesign alternative

When trying out Publisher and Scribus, I found Inkscape to hold its ground in recent years and ended up using it for desktop publishing. While it lacks in text features (like preset styles and column breaks), it has more extensive vector tools and accepts contributions. I've never used InDesign, if that should be noted.

Some issues I found

PaintToolSAI is not available for mac directly, and ibisPaint is available for Android and Windows.

Warn Users That Sumatra Is Not Accessible To Screen Readers

In search for an Acrobat alternative, I found Sumatra, which is already a very well established program, with years of development. I remember trying it like almost 10 years ago and having to drop it because it wasn't accessible. The other day, i decided to give it another chance to see if anything changed in terms of accessibility, and, to my surprise, the answer was no. It really feels surprising that such a well known, liked and established software still doesn't follow basic software development guidelines at this day, but it is what it is. I just ask you guys to warn users about this fact then.
P.S. If you want more info about this, you can check this:
