I'm getting this repeatedly over the last few days, from searching about it appears to be an issue with Gdown or at least, part of it's code. Unfortunately I'm zero help when it comes to python.

Do you think it's possible to fix or would it require a complete rewrite?

I don't know if it is possible but you couldn't add a Google Drive download, it would be interesting, well it's just a proposal

When downloading a public url:

Permission denied: https://www.mediafire.com/?mylink
Maybe you need to change permission over 'Anyone with the link'?

extractDownloadLink is a function that seeks for link, which begins on http://. Lately many of these links begins on https://.
It's a good idea to add OR function to regex match, just for a quick fix:

previously:

def extractDownloadLink(contents):
    for line in contents.splitlines():
        m = re.search(r'href="(http://download[^"]+)', line)

updated:

def extractDownloadLink(contents):
    for line in contents.splitlines():
        m = re.search(r'href="((http|https)://download[^"]+)', line)
