I tried several times to boot my laptop from USB but I keep getting the "This it not a bootable disk" error on boot.
( laptop already running lubuntu which I have installed by making a USB before )
I formatted the USB to FAT32 and tried dd again ( which takes forever ) but still same error.

Any idea what I can do to fix this?

I tried to run the script on a newly set up virtual machine with CentOS.
The script did not output an error, however the generated image file was empty.
I found it was the missing 32-bit libraries on the system by running the extlinux setup manually.

This fixed it.

yum -y install glibc.i686
apt-get install ia32-libs

Maybe you can check if this command fails and output and error message to the user?
