Welcome to James-ville, Population: 1

Full Stack engineer in the Google Cloud Platform space, since 2014. Father since 2006. Human being since 1981.

Tech Stack

I have experience with the follow technologies:

  • Angular for front end
  • NestJS for back end
  • NodeJS for back end
  • Typescript coding standard
  • MySQL for relational database
  • Firestore for document-type database
  • Google Cloud Platform for deployment and devops

Home Server

James runs his own server on-premesis, an old desktop from 2011. It is running Ubuntu Server 20.04 LTS with Docker and Docker Compose in order to manage several containers and stacks. Home Automation, local media (music and video), backup solutions for both Windows and Mac, Minecraft, and an ever-changing collection of random fun containers he happens to be playing with.

Hardware

Since his first introduction to physical computing in the late nineties, James has continued to tinker with and design, invent, modify, repair, and restore gadgets and hardware. After obtaining his first 3d printer in 2019, James has created several hardware designs to solve problems around the home. From drying the dog's boots in winter, to venting humidity from the bathroom in a 100-year-old house, James applies his knowledge and curiousity to solve problems, usually by creating things that connect to the internet.

Firmware

With the introduction of the ESP8266 and ESP32 families of microcontrollers, James has used these devices to create and solve problems around the home. Using platforms such as Arduino, PlatformIO, and Home Assistant / ESPHome, James takes advantage of the low cost and high availability of microcontrollers and sensors to connect and communicate between the devices in his home.

Software

While his primary focus is professional web development, James enjoys writing fun and helpful software in his spare time. He has created Chrome Extensions to improve his home office,.

Dog

James currently is owned by a large Greyhound named Scooter. As an office manager, Scooter maintains an atmosphere of relaxed authority, often keeping a watchful half-closed eye on the work being done.

He also occasionally publishes a video to his YouTube channel about home automation or mathematics.
