striprtf's Introduction

striprtf

Build status

Purpose

This is a simple library to convert rtf files to python strings. A lot of medical documents are written in rtf format which is not ideal for parsing and further processing. This library converts it to plain old text.

How to use

from striprtf.striprtf import rtf_to_text
rtf = "some rtf encoded string"
text = rtf_to_text(rtf)
print(text)

If you want to use a different encoding than cp1252 you can pass it via the parameter encoding. This is only taken into account if no explicit codepage has been set.

from striprtf.striprtf import rtf_to_text
rtf = "some rtf encoded string in latin1"
text = rtf_to_text(rtf, encoding="latin-1")
print(text)

Sometimes UnicodeDecodingErrors can happen because of various reasons. In this case you can try to relax the encoding process like this:

from striprtf.striprtf import rtf_to_text
rtf = "some rtf encoded string"
text = rtf_to_text(rtf, errors="ignore")
print(text)

How to use online

If you don't want to install, there is also an online version available at https://striprtf.dev which can be used for free.

History

Pyth was not working for the rtf files I had. The next best thing was this gist: https://gist.github.com/gilsondev/7c1d2d753ddb522e7bc22511cfb08676

~~Very few additions where made, e.g. better formatting of tables. ~~

In the meantime some encodings bugs have been fixed. :-)

Pushing to PyPi

striprtf's Issues

Error while decoding characters

I'm having issues while decoding some characters.
I get the following errors when decoding some rtf text:
"'charmap' codec can't encode character '\x96' in position 0: character maps to ",
"'charmap' codec can't encode character '\x93' in position 0: character maps to ",
"'charmap' codec can't encode character '' in position 0: character maps to ",
"'charmap' codec can't encode character '\x99' in position 0: character maps to ",
"'charmap' codec can't encode character '□' in position 0: character maps to ",
"'charmap' codec can't encode character '∴' in position 0: character maps to ",
"'charmap' codec can't encode character '\x95' in position 0: character maps to "

If necessary, I can send you the rtf files that resulted in those errors.

Thank you

Restore compatibility with Python2

The current version of this package is not compatible with Python2. I'm aware that this Python version is no longer supported. However, since it's easy to restore Python2 compatibility of this package by simply replacing the open in line 8 of setup.py with io.open, and especially since this is already used in line 12, I think it's worth having this for both legacy code and code style reasons. So, please, do consider this minimal change.

Thank you,
Andreas

Codec probem

When I run StripRTF with some of the RTF data I have, I get a codec error.

~\anaconda3\lib\site-packages\striprtf\striprtf.py in rtf_to_text(text)

     14     def decode(self,input,errors='strict'):

UnicodeEncodeError: 'charmap' codec can't encode character '̂' in position 0: character maps to <undefined>

With another text, the error is the same, but the problematic character is '́'
Does anyone knows how to solve this? If necessary, I can share the piece of rtf text that raises the error.

Thanks in advance

\- (soft-hyphen) and \_ (non-breaking hyphen)?

Right now, the code supports \~ for non-breaking space, but the RTF spec (1.9.1) lists a couple of other special characters that could be easily supported in the same way:
image
In particular, it seems that \- (optional hyphen) should map to U+00AD (soft hyphen), and \_ (non-breaking hyphen) should map to U+2011 (non-breaking hyphen).

For example,

if char == "~":
if not ignorable:
out += chr(0xa0)
elif char in "{}":
if not ignorable:
out += char
elif char == "*":
ignorable = True
elif char == "
":
if not ignorable:
out += char
elif char == "\r":
if not ignorable:
out += char
could be simplified to something like:

if char in specialchars:
    if not ignorable:
        out += specialchars[char]
elif char == "*":
    ignorable = True

and then just add all the other cases as additional entries in specialchars.

Fail to convert numbers sometimes

Hi,
I'm using striprtf to convert menu plans to plain text.
It works most of the time, but sometimes the date is not converted correctly.
The rtf says:
05.08-09.08.2019
and when I parse it, it goes like:
05.08.-.08.2019

I'm using Python 3.7.4 and striprtf 0.0.5
It works when I use your online page (https://striprtf.dev/) - so either you fixed it there already or it has something to do with my python version.

Speiseplan KW 32-33 Eybl.zip

UPDATE:
I tried it now with python 3.6.9 and 3.5.7 as well.
Same problem. I also have another example, where it doesn't work as well. The filename is:
Speiseplan KW 16-17 Eybl.rtf

You can find my whole project here:

problem with backslash in the rtf string

as we all know python think backslash's as a escape literal and finding rtf with out backslash's is impossible while this can be handled by prepending with the row 'r' or 'R' before the rtf string to tell python no no this backslash's are literal's not escape sequence.

the problem that i am facing is if the rtf is fetched from the mssql database and let us say i am accessing the rtf like an object how do i prepend the rtf string with the row 'r' or 'R' Or escape the backslash's by replacing with two backslash's ?

note that replacing in the database is impractical

New update error

Hi! cheers from Brazil.

I currently use this lib at my job, which consists of medical reports and the with the new update I was getting this error:
'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0xa0 in position 0: invalid start byte

And even if I used the option encoding=" " , the error still persists.

So in order to not break the pipeline here I had to switch to the older version.

But I'm really grateful for this project couldn't do what I do without.

UnicodeEncodeError: 'charmap' codec can't encode character '➔' (➔) in position 0: character maps to <undefined>

Having an RTF file containing A ➔ B fails.

Example file

Test.rtf.txt (remove .txt from it)

from striprtf.striprtf import rtf_to_text  # pip3 install striprtf

FILE = 'example_rtf_from_above.rtf'
with open(FILE, 'r') as f:
    data = f.read()
# end with

data = rtf_to_text(data)

results in the following error:

I get an error with while encoding character ''.

I have been using the striprtf libraty and it has worked great! But, for some of the texts I that I am decoding I get the following error:

'charmap' codec can't encode character '' in position 0: character maps to

And I have tried mutliple things to be able to replace, encode or ignore the '' character but I coudn't. So I wanted to report the issue, since the library works very good.

I attached a txt version of the rtf file, since rtf is not accepted by GitHub.

Decoding non-ASCII chars to UTF-8 is problematic

Text of the string is below. The 'D0 char is incorrectly encoded for UTF-8. Problem is that there are 'hex and \unicode chars in addition to straight ascii. Not sure how to handle this correctly; the RTF may have a sequence of 'hex that describes some unicode encoding as opposed to using \unicode representation. MSWord somehow manages to process this correctly; probably by assuming that 'hex is a single character and not part of some byte stream that could be a UTF-16 representation. The wikipedia is pretty clear that rtf is a stream of ascii >characters< and that the 'hex form is a way of specifying a >character< bigger than 127.

I could be wrong ;)

I think you might need to go to a high-precision intermediate representation before converting. Yes, it's another pass over the data.

Some Text Being Missed {\fldrslt Service:}}

I wanted to reach out to get some ideas on how best to update the code to handle a situation i have run into

I have an RTF that is encoded with text that looks like this

{\fldrslt Service:}}

currently the striprtf is not catching this and the text 'Service:' is lost

i am looking at adding some updates to try and handle this situation and since i just started down this path looking for a little guidance

add cli

Something like striprtf file.rtf which outputs the text of the rtl file.

ValueError: chr() arg not in range(0x110000)

Hi,

It works well most of the time, but I got following error at some point:
File "~/.env/lib/python3.7/site-packages/striprtf/striprtf.py", line 112, in rtf_to_text if c > 127: out.append(chr(c)) #NOQA ValueError: chr() arg not in range(0x110000)

I debugged a little bit, and the problematic arg is 2018444. I can catch the error so no big deal, but it would be great if you could fix it.
I didn't have time to dig into your implementation and I don't have a single clue about RTF structure, but if needed I can also work on it and send you a PR when I find some time.

Cheers!

rtf_to_text ignores the errors parameter

The errors= Parameter to rtf_to_text is documented in docstrings and mentioned in several issues (#34, #27, #27) but it is completely ignored and not being passed to .decode(..) ... therefore leading to UnicodeDecodeErrorss.

Extra required library (tabulate) when pip installing v0.0.9 that isn't in setup.py

Hi there, great work on this package! - I went to give the new version a try and noticed this issue when doing the following:

pip install striprtf==0.0.9

and importing the library:

from striprtf.striprtf import rtf_to_text

I'll get the error:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>
  File "/anaconda3/lib/python3.7/site-packages/striprtf/striprtf.py", line 3, in <module>

And if I manually unzip, I do see this in line 3
from tabulate import tabulate

I should note that if I manually install tabulate, no issue as expected.

Not reading in a link(?)

Hi,

I have roughly 2000 rtf files containing articles and I realized that it does not read in the title which is formatted in blue and underlined (like a link but I cannot find an actual link behind it). If I manually set the title to "normal" formatting, it does read it in though. Do you have an idea where that might come from?

Thanks for your help!

Cuts off first word of line.

It is losing the hours of a time format, i.e. r'\d\d:\d\d' becomes r':\d\d', if it is at the start of a line.
It also loses the first word of a new line. I've have been staring at the rtf code inside the documents but have not been able to determine a causal pattern, because sometimes it doesn't take all the first words and sometimes it leaves the time alone, too.

After convert:.........|..........Original rtf:
10:56 AM ............. |..........10:56 AM\par
s so funny..............|.......... It's so funny.

, January 13, 2010.. |........Wednesday, January 13, 2010}

and so on.

Too much print with new 0.0.19

Hi, Thank you for your excellent work.
With your latest commit, there is too much printing going on (due to line 150 of striprtf.py). Ideally, it would be great to implement a logging mechanism that prints this type of information in debug mode.

suspicious behavior

Hey!

I was trying to decode an RFT file and rtf_to_text threw an error "Cannot decode a symbol З blah-blah".
I tried passing several different encodings to rtf_to_text but it didn't work.
Then I looked into the source code and found this line. I have uncommented it and tried passing "blahblah" as the encoding expecting that it'd throw me a print, but it didn't.

Then I started to suspect that this or this line actually overrides the encoding argument that I pass to the function. After removing these two lines and setting the correct encoding everything went smoothly.

Idk what's going on there but you should probably look into it as this feels wrong :).

Redundant lines of code, suggestion, and question

Hi there!

Neat little package you have here. Thank you :-)

I was wondering, are lines 143 and 153 redundant? On that note, in this try block, could you not just do

if stack:
    ucskip, ignorable = stack.pop()
else:
    ucskip = 0
    ignorable = True

This might be more performant than a try block.

I was also wondering, would you mind if I ported this logic into another language?

All the best!

cyrillic turned into chinese

Hi

I have 2 files in cyrillic. I can read both without issue in MS Word.
The first seems to work fine with:

with open(fullpath) as infile:
                content = infile.read()
                text = rtf_to_text(content ,'ignore')

The second (bad.zip) gets turned into chinese characters

good.zip
bad.zip

sample output from the good one:

>>> tabtext =text.split("|||")
>>> print(tabtext[0])
Таблиця розподілу номерного ресурсу
Кіровоградська область|
Код зони - 52

sample output from the bad one:

>>> tabtext =text.split("|")
>>> print(tabtext[0])
亦犭桷 痤顼钿畴 眍戾痦钽 疱耋瘃
它獬怦赅 钺豚耱鼃
暑 珙龛 - 32

if i leave out the "ignore", i get:
UnicodeDecodeError: 'gbk' codec can't decode byte 0xff in position 6: illegal multibyte sequence

any idea how i can work around this?

striprtf parser not working for one of the rtf file
