White Bars In Desktop Transition OSX Lion

When I change desktops on Lion there is a white bar exactly where the menu bar
is. This is pretty understandable as I am using your app to invert the colour
of the menu bar.

Request: Global keybinding

Nocturne could really do with a global keybinding. There would simply be just
one user-assignable keybinding - to toggle
day / night mode.

Reasons:
1. Overall, some users are desktop users and therefore don't have a light
sensor in their computer.
2. Laptop users may want a convenient manual control in addition to the
auto-sensor.

How to implement:

Global keybindings can't be done in Cocoa. You must use a call which is part of
the old Carbon API. There are enough
examples on the web, including a sample project from Apple.

Look for "RegisterEventHotKey" in Carbon API reference

After power save causes screen to disable, on restore tint is removed and nocturne is monochrome

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Configure nocturne to use a tint.
2. Trigger screen to turn off (either through power savings or through hot
corner)
3. Twitch mouse or type on keyboard

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Screen is now monochrome (but still night mode) instead of in tinted mode.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Version 1.0.6, Leopard 10.5.6

Please provide any additional information below.

Color Tint stops working when iTunes visualizer runs full screen, when screens are added or removed, or when Spaces are switched

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. In Nocturne preferences, uncheck all options except Tint Colors. Make white
be 50% gray.
2. Launch iTunes, start playing a track, and press Command-T to turn on the
visualizer.
3. Press Command-F to make the visualizer full-screen.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expect to see the visualizer full-screen, 50% dimmed. Instead, the moment
iTunes starts fading
the screen to black before jumping into fullscreen, the dimming stops. The
visualizer is at full
brightness, and the screen remains at full brightness even after exiting the
visualizer.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Nocturne 1.0.4, iTunes 7.4, Mac OS X 10.4.10.

Please provide any additional information below.
The only way to dim the screen again is to switch Nocturne to day mode (which
doesn't change
the display at all) and then back to night.

Adjust Screen Brightness doesn't do anything

The "Adjust Screen Brightness" control has no effect. When checked, I can
adjust the slider but that has no effect on the screen. Other controls (e.g.
invert. monochrome) do as I expect.

Using Nocturne 2.0.0 on MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.8.

Inactive menu bar options becomes enabled after viewing a video in fullscreen mode

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Run Nocturne with one or both Menu bar options disabled
2. Start iTunes/Quicktime/VLC/Flash video and enter full screen mode
3. Exit full screen mode

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The menu bar should retain the specified preferences but instead is inverted
and dims when inactive regardless of the menu bar preferences.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Nocturne 2.0.0, Mac OS X 10.6.6

Please provide any additional information below.
Preferences can be restored by enabling then disabling the options.

Nocturne does not restore day mode colors if "Tint Colors" is selected

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Start Nocturne. Check the box that says "Tint Colors". Leave other settings
at default.
2. Switch to night mode.
3. Switch back to day mode.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expected result: The screen should be restored to normal colors.

Actual result: The screen restores correctly for a moment, but then turns red
monochrome. The
red is not the same as night mode; it appears to be inverted.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Nocturne 1.0.6 on OS X 10.5.4. System is a current-generation MacBook Pro 2.4
GHz Core 2
Duo, 4 GB RAM, GeForce 8600M GT graphics with 256 MB VRAM.

Please provide any additional information below.

I hate to file a bug so soon. I randomly checked for a Nocturne update and it
looks like I was the
very first person to download 1.0.6, a few seconds after it was posted!

Tint + Hide desktop modes don't work with dual monitor

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Open Nocturne on a dual monitor system
2. Select tint mode or hide desktop mode

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
It ignores the values on the second monitor. The primary monitor works
correctly though

Doesn't work with full screen viewing in 10.7+

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Switch to full screen viewing
2. Switch to a full screen viewing app

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expect that when I go to full screen viewing of an app or a different app
that the menu bar is not shown unless I hover my mouse at the top of the
screen. Instead I get just a black bar at the top of the page where the menu
bar would be. Furthermore, when going back to the main desktop screen the menu
bar only shows when the mouse is hovered over it. Otherwise it remains just
black

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Nocturne 2.0.0 on Mac OS X 10.7.1

Please provide any additional information below.
This needs fixing.

ENHANCEMENT: Automatically de-invert desktop image

Nocturne's "Hide the Desktop" feature also hides the desktop icons, making it
less than useful; but if you use darker desktop images, they get way too bright
in "Night Mode".

So, would it be possible to grab the current desktop image and temporarily
replace it with an inverted version, when switching to Night Mode? The effect
would be to invert everything *but* the desktop, which would be more useful!

black menubar remains on screen during lion 10.7 new full-screen app mode

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. enable invert menubar in nocturne
2. run an app in lion 10.7, say safari
3. click the new full-screen button in the top right corner of the app

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
app should full-screen and the menubar should disappear
the menubar disappears, but a black background remains where it was, covering
up part of the app

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

ENH: option to not display the menubar icon

I wish there was a checkbox to not display the Nocturne icon in the menubar,
like most menubar apps have. Then, doubleclicking Nocturn.app while it is
already running would display the Preferences window, instead of toggling
between Night and Day mode like it does now. (I like the menubar inverted and
dimmable all the time, so the icon just takes up space.)

Original issue reported on code.google.com by kwiniec on 12 Sep 2011 at 11:46

On launch, Menubar Dimming Setting is Not Properly Set on Launch

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Set Nocturne to invert and dim the menubar to something above totally black
but dimmer than full brightness
2. Quit Nocturne and relaunch it
3. Menubar dims all the way to black until initial mouseover

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The menubar should dim initially to the same level as the set dim level but
instead dims to black on initial proram launch.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
2.0.0 on Mac OS 10.6.6, now running my own version (see below)

Please provide any additional information below.
I've made my own modification the source code and created a patch file for the
mod, available at http://cl.ly/3V0R350B1z0q2T3F3F0y - just run "patch
QSNocturneController.m QSNocturneController.m.patch" to patch it, or just copy
and paste the lines from the patch file. After applying the patch, Nocturne
properly launches with the menubar dimming setting at its proper level.

"Dim when Inactive" behavior happens when it's not checked, when a full-screen app is run

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Disable dim when inactive
2. Run a full-screen DVD movie
3. Hover mouse over menubar area to see it appear then disappear though option
isnt checked for that

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The bar hides as it should for a full-screen program but upon exiting
full-screen mode the menubar remains hidden, with the dim when inactive
behavior where you can hover the mouse to show the menu bar. however, the
check mark is not checked in the program preferences.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Nocturne and Screen Saver

To maximize Nocturne's effects and keep the room dark when I'm away from my
computer, I choose an all-white screen saver that Nocturne inverts to black
once activated.
As a result of this, unless I manually change the screen saver back to a
colorful/interesting one when I'm not using Nocturne, I am stuck with an
all-white screen saver, which is not optimal. (I am sure that my backlight life
will suffer as a result...)

Can there be a way for Nocturne to select a specific screen saver when it is
activated? This way I could select a screen saver for regular use, and another
that, when Nocturne inverts my screen, appears completely black.

(Sorry if this is placed in the wrong location, but I'm not sure where
something like this belongs...)
Thanks for the great product!

Menubar stays dark and autohidden after full-screen

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Start nocture (in Day mode)
2. Switch to full-screen in some app (e.g. Keynote)
3. Switch back out of full-screen, and menubar is now dark and auto-hidden

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Menubar should maintain state, not become dark.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Nocture 2.0, OS X 10.6.7

Please provide any additional information below.
Menubar can be restored either by switching back to the login-screen and

Automatic switching with light sensors does not work with new MacBook Pro

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Use the new (Nov. 2008) MacBook Pro and Nocturne 1.0.6
2. Set 'Use light sensors to switch' ON
3. Set lighting spectrum to any reasonable numbers
4. Work in a low-light environment (that would trigger Nocturne with same
numbers on the old MacBook Pro)

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Night mode is expected, and it never changes. Also, actual lighting levels
on the Preferences window seem extremely high all the time.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Nocturne 1.0.6 with OS X 10.5.5

OS X Lion Full Screen Menu Bar Issue

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Launch any program that supports full screen capability. (Ex: Safari)
2. Activate full screen mode.
3. Half of the adress bar will be covered with the menu bar itself. Also, the
text will be scrambled.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

I expect the menu bar to disappear completely when working in full screen mode,
and appear only when I move the mouse the the top. However, this is not what
actually happens. In fact, half of the adress bar will be covered with the menu
bar itself. Also, the text will be scrambled. (Screenshot attached).

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

OS X Lion 10.7.1
Nocturne 2.0.0

Please provide any additional information below.

I guess no more information is needed as the problem is clear, and more obvious
with the screenshot attached.

Thank you.

Spaces and Multiple Monitors don't work properly with Tint Colors, Hide Desktop, and Invert Hue

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Use spaces or a second monitor
2. Only primary monitor will reflect tinting and hue changes
3. Only the space active when either switching from day to night, or when
the settings were applied will reflect the change
4. Change to a different space, hue and tinting go back to defaults

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The settings set in the preferences should stay intact across all spaces
and second displays

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
1.0.4

Please provide any additional information below.
Only the active space and the primary display will hold settings set in the
preferences. Switching to other spaces will change the view back to the
default settings for night. Switching back to the original space that the
settings were set in and everything goes back to the way it should.
Preferences settings do not change when switching spaces, ie all settings
are global but the spaces don't reflect that. Only 1 space gets the
settings from the preferences all others get the default.

From my limited knowledge of mac programming, it seems like the settings
are only applied to the primary screen when the program tweaks the display
parameters. It is leaving out secondary and whatever spaces uses to
define the separate spaces.

Safari text boxes are scrambled when Nocturne is active

What steps will reproduce the problem?

1. Start Nocturne 1.0.4 and switch to night mode.
2. Start Safari and load www.google.com.
3. Type into the search box and notice that the text appears scrambled.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Expected output is readable text. Actual output is a scrambled text box. I'm
unable to get a
screenshot as capturing the screen causes it to be refreshed, which unscrambles
the text box.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Nocturne 1.0.4 on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. The hardware is a first-generation
MacBook Pro 15"

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Start Nocturne. Keep all the settings as default.

Dimmed Menubar hue inverts after a window goes full screen. Must un-dim and re-dim to restore.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. set nocturne 2.0.0 to dim menubar when inactive.
2. full screen any application - movist, niceplayer, the firefox/minefield
3.7 alphas
3. un-fullscreen the application
4. observe your menubar, mouse over, etc.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expect the menubar to not have inverted hue when I mouse over or when not
dimmed to black.

Instead i see:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/18205/Screenshots/invertednocturne.postfullscreen.png

The colors are inverted and I have to uncheck Dim when inactive and recheck
it to use it again.

Menubar not truly inverted

What steps will reproduce the problem?
I haven’t been able to find a way to reproduce this yet.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Invert menubar should truly invert all colors inside the menubar, but it does
not do this all the time. Sometimes it only inverts the status menu icons and
the menubar itself - but not all colors. See the screenshots provided below.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
I’m using the official 2.0.0 build (nothing nightly ;)) on OSX 10.6.6 on a
MacBookPro5,4.

Please provide any additional information below.
See the screenshots. The correct behaviour should be the yellow selection. Also
there is a screenshot of the inverted Little Snitch Statusbaricon, which you
can see on the ‚buggy‘ screenshots, doesn’t get inverted either.

Slight note: I’d rather rate this as a new feature. I actually really like
having only the bar itself inverted and not all colors on it. Black-Blue is a
nice mix. So, if it is possible to get this „bug“ into a function, it would
be pretty awesome. Pitty that my ObjC skills aren’t that good (yet) :D

Terminal and Safari have scrambled characters

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Switch nocturne to night mode
2. Open Terminal or
3. Open Safari

The Terminal line showing the prompt has scrambled character and will often now
allow
recognizing a single character from the user input after the prompt.
Same thing happens when a html page loaded in Safari defines css-rules that
make the text color
or background of a link text change while hovering with the mouse.

1.0.4 on OS X 10.5.5

Thank you for this excellent program!

(X means checked, 0 means not)

X Invert screen
X Hide desktop
X Disable shadows
0 Adjust screen brightness

X Monochrome
0 Tint Colors

X Invert hue

0 Invert menu bar
0 Dim when inactive

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Nocturne 2.0.0 on OS X 10.6.5 Build 10H574

MacBook Pro
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M and 9600M GT

Color tint lasts when switching to day

To reproduce this problem:
1. Invert screen with Nocturne
2. Switch back to day

The screen still has the monochrom green->black scheme that I set up, though
the desktop is visible and the colors are no longer inverted. Quitting the app
solves the problem.

Autodetect and mask large light colored regions

The only issue with Nocturne is that some applications (such as Firefox)
alternate light background content with dark background content.

The dark content becomes a bright flash and can be very disturbing late at
night. For example, if you close a full screen Terminal it will produce a
bright flash.

One way to get around this would be to detect and mask large regions that
would be rendered as light colored. This would ensure that *all* windows
and displays were dark at all times. I'm not a GUI programmer, but I assume
that you have access to each frame before it's displayed on screen as well
as each window. Pseudocode would then be something like this:

for each rendered frame
for each window in that frame
determine if the window is majority light or dark (simple heuristic
would work)
if it is majority light, then render as dark using standard nocturne
if it is majority dark, then it would be *rendered* as light using
standard nocturne. Instead, *refrain* from inverting the colors in this
region so that the normal dark display applies.

This is a per-frame computation but would be pretty fast -- basically just
summing up the fluorescence in each window before it's rendered.

An more sophisticated algorithm would actually look at UI elements *within*
each window -- for example, some web sites may have dark borders that
become disturbingly light under Nocturne. What you could do then is segment
the region into clusters of local fluorescence intensity and invert or
leave uninverted as necessary. This segmentation would be tricky to get
fast and right, but it would ensure that Nocturne *never* rendered a large
bright flash.

Unable to remove Nocturne completely!

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.Menu bar icons are in different colors, some are in black and some are in
white
2. Nocturne has been deleted and uninstalled but Menu bar stays the same
3. tried rebooting many times but issues still happen, i've even clear out
start up apps

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Progress bar "scrambled" visual glitch on CoverSutra Player Controls window

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Switch to Night when Nocturne set to Monochrome
2. Bring up CoverSutra Player Controls window

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The track playing has a progress bar. Works fine with other settings until
Monochrome is
selected, then it scrambles the display of the progress bar.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
OS X 10.5.8 MBP running Nocturne 1.0.6 (also experienced on 1.0.4)

Please provide any additional information below.
Attached screenshot of it proper and a camera shot of it jumbled. When taking
a screen shot of
the scrambled bar, it fixes itself, I guess it refreshes. Weird bug, really
not a big deal.
