awesome-free-software's Issues

Go through list and remove any stale or non-awesome projects

This list has grown considerably, so it is time to go through the list and make sure that all projects linked to are still active.

Also, projects that are not "awesome" can be removed, which mostly applies to links that I have added without ever using the software.

  • Go through list, make sure all links and projects are active
  • Consider removing Windows-only applications?

Here is a list of items to potentially remove. Again, these have been added by me without ever using the software.

  • Headset - Only the client application is open source. https://headsetapp.co/docs/faq
  • LMMS - Good.
  • mStream - Good.
  • Mail-in-a-Box - Good.
  • Krita - Good.
  • Pinta - Good.
  • Sumatra PDF - Removed. Windows only.
  • Lepton - Removed. I added this one without verifying that it is awesome.
  • Media Mate - Removed. Same reason as above.
  • Sandman - Good.
  • todometer - Build does not work on GNU/Linux. Issues has not been addressed after one year. cassidoo/todometer#11
  • Nano - Removed. Entire Frameworks section removed.

Suggestions

Some things to add:

  • Under IDE's, Visual Studio Code
  • Under Browsers, Chromium
  • Under graphics, Piskel, Inkscape, Pinta

Need to add operating systems

Start with these: https://www.gnu.org/distros/free-distros.html

More can be added as long as they are licensed under a free software license. The above article only endorses distributions that are totally free. For this list, it is okay if there is some non-free software bundled with the OS, as users can remove that software. In other words, the OS itself should be free software.

Recommend: Oybab Trading System

Recommend a multiple languages project: Oybab Trading System

A multi-language cross-platform open source trading system that supports personal transaction management, restaurants, small shops, supermarkets, hotels, etc. It can also support secondary development and cooperate with your current business management and statistical reports.

It's free when install using, or use source code when you open source you're project.

Organize hardware section for growth

The number of organizations and companies that support and create libre hardware is growing. If more items are added to the Hardware section, we may need to organize it better.

For example, separate companies from their products.

Remove operating systems that are not entirely free

Since awesome lists are supposed to be lists of the best, not of everything, let's remove all operating systems that are not entirely free software.

You should rather leave stuff out than include too much.

After all, it's a curation, not a collection.

Here is a reference to get started: https://www.gnu.org/distros/free-distros.html

The note about some operating systems containing non-free components at the top of the OS section can then be removed.

Not all softwares are free

There are several softwares in the list which are not fully free, because they have either anti-features or proprietary/non-free dependencies.

Link to other Free Software lists

Hi, thanks for building this list!

Would you like to add https://github.com/Kickball/awesome-selfhosted as a complementary list (maybe in a new Other lists section)? I am a maintainer and we only accept Free Software in the main list (there is a separate non-free page). https://github.com/n1trux/awesome-sysadmin is also entirely FOSS.

So something like

Other software lists

Thanks in advance

Misc section?

I've noticed some weird placements, like VLC in the graphics section and qBittorrent in the file management section, presumably because there is no more appropriate section to put them in.

So, what I'm proposing is adding a new section called Miscellaneous where the software which doesn't have its own category yet should go in.

Check the list for awesomeness

Sindre emphasizes that an awesome list should be a curation of the best, not everything. Considering how long this list has grown, it's time to once again go through the list and make sure that what is here is indeed awesome.

Some indicators that something on the list isn't awesome anymore:

  • It is no longer maintained
  • Competitors have advanced further
  • The project no longer exists
  • It is very well known in the developer community (for example, Git)
  • The choices are obvious (the section on browsers)

Feel free to submit pull requests for this cleanup!
