Ah, I hadn't run into this before so it never crossed my mind. I'll see what I can do in the next few weeks. In the meantime, if you find a solution, feel free to send a PR.

I've tried multiple options to fix this and none is perfect. Were you able to find a solution that would work well across all uses?

No not really. I now hide the nav when the viewport reaches a certain point
near the footer. It's not perfect :-/

That's all I've been able to do as well. I think once position: sticky gets sorted out we might be able to make this easier, but for now it's something that'll need to be implemented on a case-by-case basis. If you do find something better, please reopen this with an update.

Ps: My immediate thought on this would be to detect when the nav reaches the bottom of the adjacent container and trigger a class change that changes from position fixed to position absolute, bottom: 0;

This way, the nav would stick to the bottom of that container until you scrolled back up.
