dosbox-wii's Issues

Semicolon [;] key not highly distinguishable

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.Open the on screen keyboard
2.Observe the difference between the semicolon (;) and colon (:) keys

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
There should be a reasonably noticeable difference between them. However, the
bottom marking of the semicolon does not have enough of a tail to be very
distinguishable.

Does the issue occur on the latest DOSBox for Windows?
No, specific to wii gui

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
1.3 wii

Please provide any additional information below.
I spent about 5 minutes wondering why I couldn't switch drives before I
realized it was a semicolon. Not a significant issue, but something that would
be greatly appreciated if tweaked.

On-screen Keyboard

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Open Dosbox Wii
2. Press "home" on the Wiiremote

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I would like to press a key that is not on the onscreen keyboard.

Does the issue occur on the latest DOSBox for Windows?
No, all keys are present on a computer Keyboard

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
1.2, on the Homebrew Channel

Please provide any additional information below.
The on-screen keyboard is missing several vital keys: Escape, the F keys
(like F1, F6), Shift, Control, Alt, etc. Several games require these keys
(For example, one game needs F1 to open a menu, another game needs Escape
to close a message).

I have attempted to fix this problem by opening Dosbox (The same version,
0.73), and mapping the key to a different one, but it does not register in
Dosbox Wii. I put the mapper.txt file in both the folder where the program
is and where the dosbox.conf file is.

This is very cumbersome; not everyone has a USB keyboard.

[Enhancement] Increase default RAM allocation

It's kind of silly to have the default amount of memory set to 16MB when
the Wii has nearly 4x that amount just sitting there being unused. Why not
put it to use?

Sure you can set it manually, but how many people know that? And it'd be
possible for those said people to attempt installing something like Windows
95 which definitely would take advantage of more RAM.

Problem with Wiimote

Introduction:
I have tried this fantastic application on my wii, but there is a problem
with The Incredible machine (1993), the game work great but without sound
(this isn't a big problem, I wrote for another problem):

If I use a normal mouse and a normal keyboard insert in the 2 usb port of
wii the game work properly.
But if I try to use the Wiimote the cursor can't go in any part of the screen.
The wiimote can move the mouse only in a rectangle portion of the screen
("an invisible wall"), the rectangle depend where the mouse cursor are
before I start to use wiimote, if I move the mouse with keyboard or mouse
and then I use wiimote the "invisible wall" exists but is in another position.
Can you fix this bug?

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
I have firmware 4.0e and I use 0.73.02 version of DosBox.
I have tried to change screen aspect ration 4:3 and 16:9 and the type of
Television [50Hz (576i), and 60Hz(480i)] but the problem persist.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Run SimFarm
2. Screen will switch to black screen
3. One can still hear the sound
4. Wiimote still function as a mouse since moving and clicking gets some
responsive sound

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
DOSBOX on Windows displays the selection screen to start the game but
DOSBOX for Wii only displays a black screen

USB or SD drive not able to be mounted

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. type "mount u usb:/Dosbox/myapp" or put in dosbox.conf
2. type "mount x sd:/DOSBox/" or put in dosbox.conf
3. change to x: or u: drive by typing "u:" or "x:"

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
- expected to be able to mount and change to the drive. dosbox-wii reports
directory not found or reports you have to mount the drive first.

Does the issue occur on the latest DOSBox for Windows?
- works fine on DOSBox for Windows

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
I'm using Dosbox-wii v1.1, Homebrew info page says IOS61 v19.26, and I've
applied USB 2.0 cIOS provided by mplayer-ce to the Wii.
(http://code.google.com/p/mplayer-ce/downloads/list). Wii system menu 4.0U

Please provide any additional information below.

I'm using just a Wiimote, no numchuck or keyboard, at the moment, although
I've tried it with a numchuck attached. I have a WBFS formatted USB drive
and a FAT formatted USB stick. I tried switching the USB ports, and just
the FAT drive alone in both ports. I have to switch the FAT drive to port0
when using FTPii, and WBFS drives are only accessible on port0 after
upgrading the IOS USB support to v2.0, so it could be related to what IOS
dosbox-wii uses for USB access. I put the commands in the dosbox.conf
autoexec section and tried typing them in.

VGAonly setting doesn't work?

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Configure dosbox.conf to have "vgaonly" as the machine mode (as opposed
to any of the SVGA, VESA, EGA, Tandy, etc. options."
2. Try running DOSBox Wii.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

When you launch DOSBox Wii, it's a black screen. At first I thought it was
hanging, but when I type "exit" on my keyboard it quits back to the
Homebrew Channel as it should.

Does the issue occur on the latest DOSBox for Windows?

No.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Tantric's Hexxagon example app fails to load - is this a bug in r43?

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Install Hexxagon app on an SD card as instructed at
http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Hexxagon
2. Launch app from Homebrew Channel, running on System Menu 4.0E
3. DOSBox appears to use sd:/DOSBox/dosbox.conf instead of
sd:/apps/hexxagon/dosbox.conf, sits at Z:\> prompt as a result instead of
launching the game

Tantric suggested in the Talk section [1] of the aforementioned Wiki page
that DOSBox might be trying to load "apps/hexxagon/dosbox.conf" instead of
"sd:/apps/hexxagon/dosbox.conf".

C++ isn't my first language, but I've put together a simple test case
(attached) for the CreateAppPath function added in r43 - when I feed it
"sd:/apps/hexxagon/", it gives me back "apps/hexxagon/" - is this the
expected input and output, and is it the cause of the problem?

Wiimote causes lockup

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Plug-in and activate 1 wiimote. No attachments.
2. Startup DOSBox Wii.
3. Do nothing - just wait.

You will see the dos cursor blinking, and then start to blink faster. At
this point you're locked up - even the Home button doesn't work. You can
wait forever, but it will never unlock.

If you now plug in a Classic Controller, and wait awhile, your cursor will
eventually return to normal and the lockup ends.

OR

If you have a Classic Controller plugged in on bootup and repeat steps 1-
3, no lockup occurs. But if you unplug the classic controller, it will
soon lockup.

This could be a bug in SDL_sysjoystick.c in SDL Wii.

Enhancement - Map (+) to ENTER

There are several games in which you need to press enter at some screens
to advance to the next one.

If you don't have a USB keyb plugged, you can not press it since the on-
screen keyb doesn't have an enter key. And even if it had it, it would be
kind of useless and uncomfy to open the on screen keyb just to hit enter.

Having the ENTER key mapped to (+) would be great.

Sound settings that make for normal gameplay

Playing Dune 2, there is severe background music stuttering. I had this
problem running Dosbox on ubuntu, but then I changed the midiconfig value
and the issue was fixed. Is there a similar device port that can be used
for the Wii that will fix this problem?

What is the max number of fixed cycles the Wii can handle?

I know this might be not the right place to ask this. But I could not find
a Wiki section or anything similar. If you consider this is inappropriate
feel free to delete it.

I was manually configuring several games, and as you know, if you set a
fixed cycles number and it exceeds the max number of fixed cycles that can
be handled by the system, it causes several slow down.

I have also noticed that setting cycles=max sometimes does not give me the
expected results, so I'd like to set a fixed cycles number manually
without exceeding the one the wii can handle.

Can anybody tell me if you know what is the max number of fixed cycles
that the Wii processor supports?

Thanks in advance,

Roland MT-32

I'm trying to use a Roland MT-32 in DOSBox Wii. I'm able to do so in my
copy of DOSBox 0.72 on the PC. I read somewhere that only unofficial
builds have support for the MT-32, but that doesn't sound right given what
I have here. Is there an issue with Wii MT-32 emulation or is this a
knowingly disabled feature? Is there anything I can do to enable it?

I'm attaching the dosbox.conf file I'm using in DOSBOX Wii, just in case
there's some setting I've got wrong that you can tell me about.

Some games have the tendency to make dosbox freeze at random. Often only dosbox
will be frozen while the emulator's gx menu is still functional. The addition
of a Reset button like in your other emulators would be very useful.

TANDY emulation issues

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Edit dosbox.conf to emulate a Tandy system instead of VGA etc.
2. Try running certain software for the Tandy 1000 - for example, run an
old Sierra AGI game like King's Quest 1-3 or Space Quest 1-2.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

While the Tandy emulation works insofar as the Tandy 3-voice sound and
emulation of other system foibles is fine, it seems like some software
designed with a Tandy 1000-related video mode in mind does not output
correct video. Personal Deskmate 2, which requires a Tandy machine and
does not display on EGA/VGA and up systems, works fine, oddly enough, but
a Monopoly game from back in the day that I own does not. The easiest
example to see, though, is Sierra AGI. Under a normal VGA machine the AGI
games will give you correct video but only PC speaker audio. Under the
Tandy machine the fuller 3-voice sound will be present but the video will
have black vertical bars interrupting it, almost as if a "jail cell"
effect was going on. The Monopoly game (which as far as I know was
intended for free back in the day other than paying for S&H on the floppy)
shows differently corrupted video, however.

Does the issue occur on the latest DOSBox for Windows?

Both Monopoly and AGI games work fine for me on the Windows DOSBox .72.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

DOSBox for the Wii, based on version 0.72 of the DOSBox code.

Please provide any additional information below.

As I said, I can provide the Monopoly game if people feel comfortable with
me doing so. I don't want to attach it until I know it's kosher to do so.

Ive been beta testing emulators for a few people for a few different
emulators such as WiiApple, Hatari Wii, Frodo Wii, and UAE Wii. I have
noticed that DOSBox Wii has a few problems such as crashing at random
times, the Conf file not being created correctly (fixed by using my PC
version's Conf file), and VGA problems. Today (5-15-09), I download from
WiiBrew the version of DOSBox Wii mentioned above. I ran Commander Keen 4
for testing purposes. After making sure the games settings are correct, I
started a game and went to the first level. I heard no sound. Same for when
jumping, grabbing items, etc. I know that versions of DOSBox Wii that I got
from GBATemp before today had almost perfect sound so this is a new problem.

Enhancement - On-Screen keyboard B=backspace

Typing in the on-screen keyboard is already a hassle, and it is more when
you accidentally enter a wrong letter, and have to move your way to the
backspace key.

I would like to suggest to map the B button to backspace when the keyboard
is showing on the screen. This way if you press the wrong letter, you can
quickly remove it.

This could be applied to the Classic controller too. a=press-key
b=backspace

Currently B is mapped to Cancel button, which is kind of frustrating
sometimes when you accidentally press it and it takes you out of the keyb
screen and you lose all what you typed, so I don't believe anyone will
miss this.

Quest for Huessein, and Quest for Alqeada hang at loading game parameters. Reaches checking music.inits and goes no further

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Download both respective titles from dosgamesarchive.com
2. Run setup file to set musis and sound configuration, as the games
require the sound card for music and sound to be setup. Choose dosbox
compatible sound device, as it wont go further than the setup screen
unless dosbox already supports a given sound card device. I chose AWE
sound device.
3. Load game exectubeable

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Well it seems dosbox is attempting to load the configurations and when it
reaches the sound part it just hangs at sound/music.inits and goes no
further. All I see is the red banner with the game title and the
previously loaded configuration parameters.

Does the issue occur on the latest DOSBox for Windows?
dosbox.com doesnt have the game listed on it's compatibility list. will
make report on their sites forum.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
version 1.2 Wii

Please provide any additional information below.
It seems both of these games should play fine, cause there is no freeze
ups and I can safely exit dosbox through the wiimote home button. I also
chose a sound card that dosbox supports from the get go, which is the AWE
sound card it appears as the games setup menu doesnt give an error about
the card not being useable when I select it to configure the sound/music.

Mapping wiimote directional pad

Sorry to stir this up again. I know it has been asked and rejected before.

I just want to know if there is absolutely no chance of getting to map keys to
the wiimote control pad. Why is this? Is this due to a hardware limitation?

Being able to map it would be awesome for many games.

Best Regards.

Extra-keys in on-screen keyboard!

Hello! :)
Really nice work on porting DOSBOX for the Wii! ;)
And the on-screen keyboard is also an awesome addition for those that do not
own a USB keyboard, like me! :P

But I still have some keyboard issues when using mostly installer/setup or
other text-GUI driven applications... :(

These are some examples of the most annoying situations:
* "Press UP/DOWN/LEFT/RIGHT to select option"
* "Press TAB to change field"
* "Press CTRL+C to exit"
* "Type source/destination path" (but one needs to delete the default path
first!)

Unfortunately I can't seem to find any way to accomplish these operations with
the available on-screen keyboard! :S

So, is there a chance for some of these "extra keys" to be added to the
keyboard?
* arrow keys (KEYCODES: 25, 26, 27, 28)
* backspace/delete keys (KEYCODES: 08, 2E)
* tab key (KEYCODE: 09)
* control key (KEYCODE: 11)

This would be an incredibly useful usability improvement for DOSBox-Wii to be
able to run correctly a lot more DOS applications!

Thanks in advance!
And keep up the great work! ;)
See ya! :)

Screen Position Setting

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.Load dosbox-wii on an old 4:3 tv.
2.Observe left face of text being unreadable.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
To be able to read the text.

Does the issue occur on the latest DOSBox for Windows?
No

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
1.3 wii

Please provide any additional information below.
Including the screen position setting to adjust screen width and height as a
percentage found in libwiigui emulators, wiimc, etc under video settings would
be very useful and appreciated.

I believe issue 40 also requests this but I thought I would submit a more
specific entry.

Rayman is very slow.

I've tried everything in my thoughts to try to get this to work, I've tried
to edit the config file, but no difference, increasing the memory from 16
to 32 doesn't work, changing cycles to max doesn't do anything either, the
only change is that the controls are delayed a bit and sometimes unresponsive.

This could also apply to some other games as well. Maybe an optional swap
file for DosBox-Wii can fix this issue?
