Wrapper / Filter around serverconsole needed

The dedicated server itself spams a lot of message for not found format while rendering, seems like its a error in the server itself. The errors appear to be writen when something is drawn/rendered in the server itself. While i cant change the behavior, this messages appear about 10-60 per 2-5 seconds, this is bad for the docker logs. Some form of wrapper is needed around the server script call which filters thoose messages out.

Server setting "difficulty Peaceful" is not used by server

Dear,
I've set the difficulty to "Peaceful" in the config.cfg file but we still see 'enemies' in the server.

I've checked the config file from within the docker (option is set correctly set).
I've checked how the theforestDS process is started and it clearly points to the config.cfg file.

Not sure if you can do anything about it (or know more about it).
Have you notices the same behaviour?

`server.cfg.example` Not Applied

Even in a fresh new install. It still uses the default values.

Starting dedicated server
Dedicated server info:
 IP:172.17.0.2, steamPort:8766, gamePort:27015, queryPort:27016
 players:8, admin password:'no', password:'no', autosave interval:30
Game setup: Standard Multiplayer Server, Continue Normal game, slot Slot1

Errors on start

Using the latest image & the supplied docker compose. The error appears to be within the image itself.

  • gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file
  • tar: Child returned status 1
  • tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
  • bash: /steamcmd/steamcmd.sh: No such file or directory
  • wine: failed to open "/theforest/TheForestDedicatedServer.exe": c0000135

I have also tried an older version tag. Same issue.

Patch version out of date

Firstly. I want to say thanks for this!! Been looking to run this is a container for so long.

I'm running into a issue where it says that the patch version of the server is different to the one in the game, I ran the steamcmd update but still doesn't seem to fix it. Any ideas?

Failed to connect to Steam

After following the basic instructions, i get the Error "Failed to connect to Steam", i even tried to wait for hours and try it again over and over, all with the same result. It just doesnt make any sense anymore to me and i feel like i am missing something out here, but i cant get it...

Via Steam:View:Servers i can even find the "Failed to connect to Steam"-Server
I can even connect, but after loading a while it says "Server does not seem to be set up properly"

Docker image won't start

Hi,

I used your docker-compose file.
I updated a bit my volumes.
I created new directories like you said in your Readme.
I generated a new token but serveur won't start.

Do you have any idea to help me?

I dont found the server in local game or external with a friend.

Can't find game?

Using an Oracle cloud vm with Ubuntu 20.04 OS, my server does not show up on the Internet or LAN list.
Any ideas why? Config is set using the host ip which I believe docker sets up.

Failed to connect to Steam

Debian Machine is having full Internet Access and also Port Forwarding is already setup. I'm not that deep in wine to find out what is going wrong here. Found several times pretty similar Logs but was not able to read the solution for that.

Tried both Bash Commands you provided with my created Steam Token.

Would be great if you could assist me to get this running.

The server got detected on steam with it's config but cannot be joined and would be stuck on loading for a while and then back to main menu.

Getting NetworkInformationException on second server startup

Hello, I am having trouble to get the server to launch a second time.
The server setup and first start is working perfectly with empty game and steamcmd folder.

To start the server I use the following docker run command on both occasions, as the container removes itself after stopping the server:

Enhancement: Update on start

Enhancement request: Set the update on start environment variable here as well, similar to how it was done in sons of the forest. I'm not sure this is going to be a real concern, because i don't know how often if at all the dev is updating the-forest anymore, but it would be a nice to have

Not a bug but a few questions

Hey sorry i didn't see a discussion board on GitHub so i decided to post it here instead. I hope thats okay?
But i just had a few questions.

  1. Can you password protect the server?
  2. Can you increase the amount of players on the server (above 8)
  3. Can you change the name of the server?
  4. Can the host use cheats?
  5. Can you import character/world saves?

Sorry for the probably dumb questions but its my first time setting up a Forest server via docker.

Server does not seem to be set up correctly

I am having an issue with the setup of the server.

I am able to connect to it via my local IP, however when attempting to connect to it via external IP it fails with the above listed error.

I believe it to be a firewall issue, however my firewall is open and other things through docker work fine.

The only thing I have done differently from the readme is I did not specifically put the files in the srv directory listed in the readme.
3. Create 2 directories on your Dockernode (/srv/tfds/steamcmd and /srv/tfds/game)

Updated by docker instance to ensure it was up-to-date and issue still persists.

Thanks for this project. Unfortunately when i try to start the docker via:

i get an error:

Also it was not clear if i need additional files for srv/tfds/game & srv/tfds/steamcmd. I added TheForestDedicatedServer.exe to the srv/tfds/game because i got following output in the first run:

constructions have disappeared

Hello,
everything works fine but I have a problem.
I played all day yesterday and unfortunately, I realize that all my constructions have disappeared.
even after a server restart these are still not there.
An idea ?

Two separate docker instances

@jammsen I was finally able to make it work. How would you recommend I it if I want to have 2 servers running in one machine? I tried just creating a new container with different docker ports but now the old server cannot be found in game, only the newly created one

I've tried to run the image on my laptop running manjaro and also in a clean CentOS 8 Virtual Machine and both started without an issue. But when running this on VPS I always get this issue.

I've been suspecting firewall issues so I've opened ports 8766 and 27000-27100 but this didn't help. This happens even when I opened everything in iptables and disabled firewalld. Any ideas why this might happen? Is this even network related?

Control the server?

Hi,

I'm very used to Docker and contained software, too.

Are the any way of controlling the server - to force save, "soft shutdown" and other things, too? I've not found any documentation related to it.

And oh; Thanks for creating the wrapper with the needed tools. It worked out of the box in my server, so that's great!

Config file, save games

Hi there,

first of all, thanks for your effort creating this.

I tried this out yesterday, played like 4h with my friends, and i tested to reconnect.
Started in the plane again...

I followed your readme, inserted my serverSteamAccount into the config file.
I also enabled "vac", looked into the logs - was enabled.

Any idea, why it's not saving?
Also changed "autosave" to 5 minutes.

If you can help me, i want you to provide my docker-compose of course :-)

Stuck at "Game autosave started" no game files created

First of all thank you for creating and maintaining this!

I do not know where to post this as an extensive search yielded no result for me.

I have follwed the configuration steps and can find the server on steam. Server name from the cfg displays correctly and the password seems to work.
However I cannot connect.

The logfile ends every time with these lines:

Game autosave started

No files are created in the "saves" folder.
Connecting to the server has no effect on the log.

Has anyone had and/or solved this problem?
Is there any way to increase log verbosity?

Instructions - Overwritten Config

Hello,

I am attempting to start a server and place my info in the config file. But whenever I start the server, everything gets overwritten in the -v directories.

Getting Started:
1.Create a new game server account over at https://steamcommunity.com/dev/managegameservers (Use AppID: 242760)
2. Insert the Login Token in the config (At serverSteamAccount)
3. Create 2 directories on your Dockernode (/srv/tfds/steamcmd and /srv/tfds/game)
4. Start the container with the following examples:

Hi! Quick question about this warning in the README for the repo:

WARNING: If you dont do Step 1 and 2 your server can/will not save!

This implies that you need to set SERVER_STEAM_ACCOUNT_TOKEN AKA serverSteamAccount in order for the game to save. But is this really true? I run the dedicated server normally on Windows (without using this Docker image), and do not set serverSteamAccount. But the game seems to save just fine still. Is this warning in the README perhaps misleading, or is there some reason that it is required in this case?

Potential Wine Issue - Server Not Starting

Hi! I'm really excited to get a dedicated server running for my friends and I, so it would be great trying to get you to help me with this. I have uploaded the log file of the system setup I created. Is seems to have had trouble either getting the game as the main issue I see is: wine: cannot find '/theforest/TheForestDedicatedServer.exe'. I'll do what I can to run tests etc so hopefully we can resolve the issue for myself, and other future users.
I am running on a synology nas, using docker.

Started it up, downloaded and ran docker-compose up to test. Everything seemed to work despite "failed to connect to steam". Got into the game and realized I needed to change some configs for ports, name, etc.

Pressed Ctrl+C to stop
made changes to config

Restarting at plane when docker container restarts

For quite a while things seemed to be working fairly well. I had a base built and was able to continue at that base. However, after restarting my server/docker container. It loads me at the airplane every time I join after the docker container restarts. I click continue when joining the server, it starts the intro cinematic, then on plane. However, it the base still exists and I can run back to it. My main issue is every time this happens I lose my entire inventory.

Any ideas?

Are there any plans to support Sons of the Forest when it releases?

Sorry to open an issue as this isn't an issue, but I wanted to know if you had any plans to support Sons of the Forest when it releases?

I'm currently working on my own solution (hosting the forest dedicated server via Cloudformation launching EC2 windows instance(s) with some bundled powershell scripts, which can be used on both local Windows machines and the hosted windows server) and I came across this repository when I wondered if it was possible to implement via docker.

I imagine it would be very minor changes, mostly the app id, the file name, and possibly the server.cfg files.

Thank you for your work on this. I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but it appears to be a very helpful solution, with 100k+ pulls on docker, no less!

Can't find my server in game.

Docker image does not build anymore

I'm not sure if this is maintained anymore, but I'm trying to create an updated version of the Docker image because of possible security vulnerabilities in the base image, as the current one is over a year old.

However, I'm unable to build the Docker image, probably due to some packages being renamed or have shifted to different repositories:

I made an attempt to fix the above in my own fork and was able to get the image to build, but the server refuses to start.

It would be nice if we could rebuild the image, especially since Docker has revised it's retention policy and has stated it will remove stale/old images from Docker Hub.

Server is running a different patch release

"Server is running a different patch release" & "Failed to connect to Steam"

So the second issue is exactly like in #24 - but the more interesting bug is that when i try to connect (via lan) it says that the server is running a diferent patch release of the game and is not compatible:
