AFAIK this is the first public API available that allows for audio fingerprinting of snippets from the middle of tracks, and which can deal with unclean audio sources (i.e. recorded ambient sound).

Other offerings (e.g. AcoustID, MusicBrainz) only handle whole-track fingerprinting, or require that the snippet is taken from the start of a track; and expect to receive clean audio taken directly from disk.
