When I investigated it appeared to not be used for anything at all.
One variable is assigned notify_obj
, but I can't see it used for anything.
I have an open PR to remove that code and the submodule completely:

The symlink specifically was giving me problems in Docker running tests manually using Pytest3 (I can't remember the full details, it was quite some time ago).
