Borough Market
8 Southwark St London SE1 1TL,
+44 20 7407 1002

The only fully independent market in London, Borough Market was closed in 1755 but reopened by a group of Southwark residents who managed to buy a plot of land between them to maintain the market. While the market area is packed with cafés and restaurants, the best food is to be had from the market stalls, open Thursday to Saturday. Whether you want to stock up for a picnic, or hover and sample as you go, there are stalls to satisfy all tastes. Many sell meat, vegetables and artisanal products, but there are enough ready-to-eat stalls to make this a bustling lunch-time hangout.
From spiced pancakes with Punjabi chutneys to Argentine street food to a German sausage deli, it’s an international flavour. A French patisserie and an amazing cheesecake stall help pad out the picnic basket, and there’s nowhere better for a well-packed meat pie. Most of the vendors here are award-winning producers, so you’re in for a quality stop. If you just want to enjoy the bustle, there are burger stalls with tables laid out under the archways.

V & A Café
Cromwell Road, London SW7 2RL

After traipsing the galleries jam-packed with ancient, world-class designs, only the most gorgeous pit stop will do for a V & A visitor. Look no further than the V & A Café. While the minimalist white corridors at the Café entrance are an entirely comfortable place to eat, head straight through to the trio of tea-rooms beyond, where a gorgeously Victorian tea experience awaits. The first room, the Green Room, was designed by Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co, the company set up by William Morris before he went on to become one of the most famous, and most recognisable, designers of the 19th century. The central Gamble Room is all light and gold and sparkling chandeliers, with mottos inscribed in the decoration like ‘Hunger is the best sauce’, and the blue and white tiles of the final Poynter are all hand-painted, completing the series of rooms that made up the first museum restaurant in the world.
A range of hot and soft drinks are served all day, with a satisfyingly large choice of cakes and pastries fresh from the mouth-watering Benugo bakery.
Lunch choices include a range of baguettes and wraps, such as Salami Napoli with gruyere, gherkin and rocket £4.95, Parisian Ciabatta, with onion marmalade, brie, rocket and English mustard mayonnaise £4.45 or a roasted salmon baguette with caper mayonnaise, rocket and lemon £4.95. Add two salads for £2 more. Children’s sandwiches come with a piece of fruit and a soft drink for £5.50.
For a more sophisticated cold luncheon, all including a choice of two fresh deli salads, options include: Crostini with prosciutto, rocket, olives, mozzarella and sunblushed tomato £8.95, Citrus-marinated free range chicken £10.50, Salmon in pastry £11.50, spinach and mushroom roulade £8.95, or country-style potted crab and shrimp pate £9.25. The salads are delicious enough to eat on their own, at £6.95 for a small selection and £8.95 for a large.
For a heartier excuse to loiter in the tea-rooms, steaming hot meals are also on offer. I saw many a visitor clutching the spiced lamb, chicken and carrot pie £9.95, but other temptations include: Vegetable gratin with aubergine, peppers, courgette and sweet potato £9.95, a range of roast meats with a choice of two vegetables from £11.50, and sea bass £11.50. Children’s portions are available at £6.50. As well as a range of hot and soft drinks, there is a selection of red and white wines.
Regular visitors needn’t tire of the options, as food choices are served according to the season, and the menu is changed every few months.

The Café is open 10.00-17.15 and 10.00-21.30 on Fridays.
Deli salads and cold lunch foods are served from 11am
Hot meals are served 11.00-15.30 and from 18.00 on Fridays.
