senatevotes's Introduction

Senate Votes

Tracking Unpopular Senate Votes

https://senatevotes.us helps visualize how many votes in the US Senate have been unpopular over the past years.

Development

With Node.js 12+ installed, run the following commands:

$ npm i
$ npm run dev

The website should be visible at localhost:3000

This is a Next.js website that uses the Static Site Generation methods added in version 9 - reading the official documentation will help you understand the structure.

senatevotes's Issues

Clearer Pass Percentage Messaging

The % needed to pass or be popular could be clearer.

  • Look into clearer messaging in the title
  • Draw a line on the Pie/Doughnut charts illustrating the margin required

Add "Leaderboard"

Luke suggested seeing a list of the most egregious differences, which I agree would be interesting

Create Logo

A logo would be pretty nice, but I'm not great at making them. Would love help here

Edit Homepage Copy

It was a rough stab at what I wanted to convey with the website, and it could be cleaned up a lot I'm sure

Add 1990s

  • 1990
  • 1991
  • 1992
  • 1993
  • 1994
  • 1995
  • 1996
  • 1997
  • 1998
  • 1999

Create auto-update GitHub Workflow Action

It should be possible to create an action that checks for new votes once a day and auto-commits them to the repository. I'm not sure how to automate population tracking yet, but for now automatically adding votes is a good start
