Documenting the process of building a low-cost air quality monitor
At the moment the monitor I've built needs WiFi and power (USB). We could make a monitor that is totally portable by getting a battery and a solar panel for the power and replacing the WiFi with a GSM connection.
You can see little outages:
The monitor is about 3 metres away from my WiFi AP so it surely can't be range. However when I've seen it happening my AP didn't have the device registered (indicating the WiFi connection was dropped, for some reason).
I connected my computer to the debug output but all it says is that it can't connect to the API services. I think I need to increase the debug verbosity and check again.
As part of #1 I did a lot of research into all the different air quality monitors I could find on the internet. I'd like to document (via a blog post?) my findings so that it helps other people doing the same thing.
It would be nice to keep the post up to date as I find new information (though realistically this probably won't happen! ๐)
There are quite a few different monitors you can find on the internet. We need to decide which one to build.
I've seen a bit of research about the accuracy of the SDS011. My reading of it (no pun intended) is that they perform pretty well compared to reference monitors and excellently considering their price. It would be good to be able to point to some useful research that talks about this, for when people inevitably ask.
