This is how we are currently thinking about it; please comment.

  • each class consists of a collection of resources; each resource is expected to not change (internally) and collect annotations on its content.
  • that resource can have one or many URLs associated with it, and those URLs can change over time
  • when someone visits a url, we ask "which class are they enrolled in that currently associates that url with a resource in that class"
  • if there is only one such class we are done
  • if there are multiple classes there will be a dropdown menu to select which class you want to be "in"; you will see those annotation.

The last point addresses in particular the case of an instructor using the same URL term after term. They will generally set their dropdown to select this term's class, so will see annotations from this term, but will also be able to switch to see annotations from other classes if they wish.

This doesn't directly resolve the problem where people change the content on pages, but does provide some ways to address it. If someone wants to change the page without losing the annotations, they can snapshot the page under a different url, then change the resource to associate with the new URL instead of the old. So for example, if you want the url during the term to be "bis2a/dna", then once the term is over you could "move" that page to "bis2a/fall20/dna" and update the url of that resource in the class. Although, I don't see the downside of having that latter url be used from the beginning, to save the hassle of moving things later.
