SongTxt README

SongTxt is a simple Visual Studio Code extension that improves the experience around typing in music transcriptions in plain text files. It is built to follow the formatting guidelines used by Ultimate Guitar.

Install

Install the extension from the Visual Studio Marketplace or search for SongTxt from the Extensions pane in Visual Studio Code.

Tuning notes syntax to include drop tunings

Currently the syntax highlighting for tunings doesn't cover drop tunings.

SongTxt needs an icon/logo

Chords remain fixed and independent of other chords on the same line

Normally, when you add a few spaces to move a chord over to line up correctly with the lyrics it corresponds to, you'll also move all of the other chords on that line too. Would be handy to make spaces just move the next chord but leave others where they are.

Chord rename refactoring support

Allow renaming a chord that applies to all instances of that chord in the song/file.

Fret numbers on tablature are brighter than dashes (strings)

Changes to a string's length (tab line) extends all strings (lines) in that tab section

Anyway to activate extension automatically on other files (not only *.txt, *.tab)?

I can do this manually using "Language Mode" in status bar or command pallete, and SongTxt does chord highlighting.
But automatic mode would be great to brows many files in folders with non standard extension

Support other instruments

Just a thought. Not sure if you would want to extend it to support to other instruments, for example 4 or 5 string bass or banjo or ukulele.

Code snippet support for generating blank guitar tablature sections

Disable the tab indicator lines in the text

These lines just clutter things up when editing song files.

Disable default code completion when SongTxt is enabled

It just gets in the way for the most part.

Support for Surrounds With brackets

Will make it easier to convert section titles from files using other formats.

Disable occurence highlighting

It just seems to get in the way when dealing with chord/tab files.

Export to HTML

Would be nice to generate html or pdf like some Markdown extensions for use in places other than ultimate guitar.

edit: It seems there are extensions for exporting code (or you can paste into a word processor retaining the colors and save from there) so maybe not so needed, but it would be nice to have html with classes that recognize a chord as a chord and not just as a certain colored thing.

Ctrl-Space -6 combo should include | characters

The ability to put in blank tabs with Ctrl-Space -6 and selecting a string setup is very handy, but it would be great if there could be | characters to separate measures. It could be just regular 4/4 time signature with 16 - characters between each pair of | for now, maybe with future development for other time signatures.

The ideal workflow would be Ctrl-Space -6, select your string/tuning configuration, then select or set a time signature and it's populated for 4 measures.

Long line detection per UG guidelines

Referring to section 1.6 of the Ultimate Guitar guidelines.

Some chord names not highlighted

Certain common chord names aren't recognised:
Example:

• Bm7b5
• Cmaj9#11
• Adim

etc...

Add more tuning snippets

I guess this could end up being an excessively long list but handling some extra tunings would be useful. For example:

• Down 1, 1.5, 2 steps.
• Drop tunings down lower. Possibly this isn't as necessary since you can easily add a standard tuning for the appropriate steps down then manually change the one string. If there was a risk of too many snippets then I think these are less important.
• Other common tunings. It's debatable as to what is common enough I guess but I would say open tunings are fairly common.

Publish the extension for codium

Tried to install the extension for codium (100% open source vscode), but it is not found there. Codium uses separate open vsx marketplace.

It would be great to have SongTxt in codium. Info on publishing:
