Use the zig compiler in your Github Actions workflows

Usage

In a Github Actions workflow file, do something like:

jobs:
  test:
    strategy:
      matrix:
        os: [ubuntu-latest, macos-latest, windows-latest]

Optionally set a Zig version:

- uses: goto-bus-stop/setup-zig@v2

The default is to use the nightly master builds.

Or pin to a specific commit using version+commithash syntax:

- uses: goto-bus-stop/setup-zig@v2
  with:
    version: 0.6.0+4b48fccad

If you are running Zig on Windows machines, you need to make sure that your .zig files use \n line endings and not \r\n. The actions/checkout action auto-converts line endings to \r\n on Windows runners, so add a .gitattributes file:

*.zig text eol=lf

This action caches the downloaded compilers in your repository's Actions cache by default, to reduce the load on the Zig Foundation's servers. Cached compilers are only about 60MB each per version/OS/architecture.

If this is really bad for you for some reason you can disable the caching.

setup-zig's Issues

older Zig version installed instead of 0.12.0 because of caching

at the time of writing, Zig 0.12.0 is the latest release and latest nightly build.
When setup-zig is trying to install the latest nightly build (which should be 0.12.0) it instead installs an older development build.

Why does it successfully restore the cache when installing 0.12.0 and choose a development build instead of 0.12.0? And why does a newer run install an older Zig version?
I tried deleting any recent Github action caches but that didn't help. Adding cache: false did fix the issue.

Somehow, it seems that the step fails to find existing caches.

This is a big problem because it means that the ZSF incurs in avoidable expenses.

Option to use latest version

It would be useful to be able to specify "latest" or "^0.11.0" (with the ^) or something as the value for version to get the action to use the latest stable release of the Zig compiler.

Verify authenticity of downloads with minisign

The zig team publishes signatures of their binaries generated with minisign; it would be nice if setup-zig made use of the signature files to verify the authenticity of the zig binaries. The zig team's public key can be found on https://ziglang.org/download/ . Minisign can be used through github actions via https://github.com/thomasdesr/minisign-action .

I'm making this issue because I am adding a build.zig to https://github.com/libui-ng/libui-ng - we'd like to use this action but we want the binary to be verified.

Now macos-latest in the github action changed to aarch64. Zig command compiled for x86_64 runs on aarch64 macos, but fails to link native libraries.
