openweb's Introduction

Mac Open Web

Most simply, Mac Open Web is a collection of open and indie Mac, iOS, and web apps that help promote the open web.

Want to contribute?

Gosh yes, thank you so much. Do a pull request or file an issue and I’ll add it. Easy peasy. And thank you.

Where’d this come from?

These kinds of things aren’t anything new, but the idea for this one came from a note that Brent Simmons sent out to a Slack group, and I thought “Why not?” So I picked it up and ran with it.

Questions?

Send me a note.

openweb's Issues

Pixelfed

I think it also deserves a place here. It's built on open web technologies, after all. ❤️

Federated Image Sharing

Clarifications?

Love the idea (and simple design) of this site, but I'm a bit unclear on the qualifications needed for the software included.

  1. What qualifies a design tool as "help[ing] promote the open web"? If being able to design websites using said tool is the qualification, then I would like to suggest Sketch by Bohemian Coding. It's built using all the latest native Mac technologies, is a great design tool for websites and apps alike, and includes several web-like integrations, such as a JavaScript API for extensions & automation and Sketch Cloud for sharing and collaborating on designs over the web.
  2. Does the software listed need to be built using the native SDKs for Mac/iOS? If not, I'd also like to suggest Visual Studio Code, as it is an extremely powerful, extensible, and well performing code editor and IDE that is quite literally built on various open web technologies, with excellent support for almost any developer toolchain you can think of.

Mellel

I think Mellel fits the bill. We are an indie company, selling a product for almost 20 years, mac and ios only.

Suggestion: Include Scrivener in 'Text & Writing'

If you are a professional writer, and you need a tool that will actually help research, plan and deliver your content (no matter what your writing process might be), there is simply nothing that comes close to Scrivener. It has been the de facto standard for professional writing for well over a decade, and the tool that all others are compared to. It just so happen to be developed by indie developers - who are also writers themselves.

Add Postbox

@good We would love to participate! We develop an email app called Postbox 7 and the website is:
https://www.postbox-inc.com

  • Our company doesn't read or store your email messages or passwords
  • We do not implement features that invade your privacy
  • We warn you if someone is trying to track your behavior
  • We help detect potential phishing and malware attacks
  • Free OpenPGP encryption through Enigmail, a 3rd-party Labs Project

We're transparent about the data we do collect and provide easy ways to opt-out:

Thanks for your consideration!

Skeletron is Dead?

The Skeletron app appears to be dead. The site hasn't updated in 3-4 years. The app didn't seem to work quite right when I downloaded it today. The author's site makes no mention of it at all.

It's a great idea and a good-looking app. I wish I was here with better news.

Unique HTML IDs for article headers

Article headers (e.g. "RSS Readers & Discovery") are missing unique HTML IDs. These would be handy for accessibility purposes, and for directly hyperlinking to particular sections of the page.

Add Notenik

Add to Text & Writing section

Notenik by Herb Bowie

An app for recording, managing and publishing collections of notes, with each collection allowed to have its own set of custom fields, such as Tags, a Link field, and a Date field.

Cyberduck

Self promotion following.

Maybe you want to add Cyberduck, a libre server and cloud storage browser for Mac since 2003.

Unmark

Unmark is a to-do list for bookmarks. It can be used for free, or pay, on the web site, but is also open source.

Add Taskade

Please consider adding Taskade! We are a small team of 3 people.

  • Text & Writing
  • Taskade by Taskade
  • A real-time collaborative editor for getting work done.

nvALT

nvALT is a fork by Brett Terpstra (who has written a bunch of other useful Mac utilities) of Notational Velocity (also a good app) that supports Markdown. It's my writing tool of choice.

Cascadea

Would love to recommend Cascadea, an indie Mac app and Safari extension for customizing any website with custom CSS.

Select icons for web-based and watch0S based apps

There are a number of web-based apps and services listed (Glitch, Pinboard, Mastodon, &c.) that could benefit from an appropriate icon.

Likewise there are also a couple of apps the provide watchOS (and CarPlay) support which need icons as well.

As long as we’re being thorough.

Optimus Player

Hi!

Optimus Player is a media player designed specifically for macOS. Major features from version 1 include color accuracy, AirPlay 2 audio, and dual subtitles.

I believe it deserves to be on this list because it is made for people who do not want to be locked into an anti-open-web subscription streaming service and it is made by an indie developer.

Coda needs removal

The Coda link is dead; that software is no longer available as it was replaced by Nova (which is already on the list)

Add RSS feed

Hi,

Would love (more) to see this site published with a sweet RSS feed :)

Cheers,
Francisco

Suggestion: Include GitFinder

GitFinder is made by an indie developer, and one of the most full-featured git clients around. Its integration into the Finder makes it quite unique, and IMHO worthy of mention.

CodeKit

Indie/small co, helpful, well-supported, and very reasonably priced.
Development category

Expanding the Podcasting category?

There are a number of audio apps (for playing, streaming, recording, and editing) that could potentially be added to the site, including Iconfactory’s Triode and mStream (#38).

Should these be included under the Podcasting category, expanding the subhead to something like Audio, Streaming & Podcasting? Or should we start a new category specifically for Audio & Video apps?

Thoughts?

Graphic Converter

I recently needed to batch process a bunch of photos for a clients web site and remembered this old goodie:

Graphic Converter

It's been around forever! I remember registering it Shareware a long time ago and receiving a 3.5" floppy in the mail with the registration number on it.
