glitch-game-club's Introduction

Welcome to the Glitch Game Making Club Resource

Welcome to the Glitch Gamemakers Resource. Many thanks for taking the time to look at our project. We hope this is a useful space and thank you in advance for any contribution you can make. We are not sponsored by Glitch.com we just love the tool as a place for our learners to have fun and learn things.

This project aims to be a network of people to support computer club activities to make games. Together we will create a hub of resources to help this happen. Our particular focus will be on; Creating audio, visual and story assets for video games using free and open tools, Coding web-based games in Javascript using Phaser.js, Fun activities inspiring a creative response to local and global issues (especially “writing / coding in-role”)

Remixable Phaser Web Games in Glitch

We are actively seeking simple 'boilerplate'/ starter games in Glitch to add to this list. Ideally these games will be half-baked in some way. By this we mean games that invite users to dive into the code by hitting remix and fix them or improve them in some way.

See below for details on how to contribute.

We will help learners to be choose their own paths, work collaboratively and be inspired to make fun games with positive messages.

Getting involved in the Clubs and our Resource

Please join us to support the Game Making Club Process and the Resources we are creating.

Can you help us in one of the following ways to get involved?

Please see CONTRIBUTING.md for more information on all of the above.

Communication and Publication Channels

Please take time to review our code of conduct aimed at young people, families and other contriubtors.

glitch-game-club's Issues

Transferring existing code snippets to CodePen

There are some great code snippets at the Phaser Examples site.
http://phaser.io/examples

This project aims to created an edited version which is in a format that can be can be easily remixed.
Can you help?

Code Pen seems to be a very accessible way to do that, and one that can work well in combination with projects in Thimble.
Here is a starter collection for Phaser games - https://codepen.io/collection/DEeRxq/#

You can make a comment to this issue linking to a code pen and I'll include it in the collection.

Name Question - HTML5 Game Making Clubs or Web Game Making Clubs

Should the name of the resource be explicitly for HTML5 games? Or is the term Web Games more accessible?

Web games could in theory incorporate Scratch, and while that is not the main focus of the content of this resource, Scratch is a great resource for prototyping games.

Also if aiming for a wide audience or non-technical audience would HTML5 Game Making put some people off?

I would really appreciate thoughts on this naming / branding issue.

Design us a nice Hugo website for the project

We would love to use this repository and Hugo as our main blogging and documentation platform.

We also want our web presence to be as inspirational as the contents of the club.

So we are looking for a Web Dev/ Designer to create;

  • a Hugo site
  • a base page with a list of our games and how to get involved
  • a blogging template

Could this be you? Please comment to ask questions or volunteer.

Need pipeline from GitHub to CodePen

The purpose of GitHub is to provide source code management. The purpose of CodePen (and equivalents) is to provide an interactive coding environment for learning sessions.

We need pipeline that takes us from making an update in GitHub to an updated CodePen enviroment.

Need to Create Blogging and Resource Template for Thimble

We could use wordpress or tumblr or medium but....

We would love to use Thimble the online code editor from Mozilla as our main blogging and documentation platform. In this way we can involve participants in our blogging process and they will also learn about altering HTML code.

We also want our web presence to be as inspirational as the contents of the club. So we are looking for a Web Designer to create a base page, a blogging template and a session documentation template. Could this be you?

Also the HTML of the pages and maybe some of the css should be easy to read and replaced by our Club participants (Ages 8 and up). Be sure to test it works in http://thimble.mozilla.org

Design wise, you have an open brief that fits the friendly, social side of tech, but be sure to [follow these guidelines] (https://mozilla.github.io/learning-networks/clubs/branding-guidelines/#club-website).

Create site structure in Hugo

Can someone create a site structure for this website that includes the following

  • home page - a base page with a grid of game and project summary
  • project updates - dynamic list of blog posts
  • about us - project page - mostly text and links static
  • get involved - static page based on Contributing.md
  • game making resources - static page a graphical grid of our top game making resources we use and a list of links to others

The "blank-phaser-platform" Game Won't Work With Thimble

The "blank-phaser-platform" game I created won't work in Mozilla Thimble as I used the unminified version of the phase library which exceed the Thimble max upload size. Using the minified version will fix it. I'll aim to submit a PR for this soon.

Game and Resource Creators Wanted

Game and Resource Creators: to help build a library of remixable HTML5 games and linked resources. Glitch (and Github) and Phaser.io are our go-to tools.

Please have a look at our README.md, CONTRIBUTING.md, and CODE_GUIDE.md

When you are ready submit a pull request for a self-contained game into the games/ folder of this repo.

In the end we may move this to a self contained repo to integrate better with glitch.com.

Happy Coding!

How can we best share our practice with Volunteers?

In Manchester we are doing our best to have an open process with running the Web Game Making Club on Tuesday with Home Ed families and on Thursdays with Rolls Cresent Primary school.

A question. How can we best share our practice? We have started a wiki page here.

  • Have you got anything to contribute?
  • What other ways could we try to build a community of game making?
  • Any other tips?

Transferring and adapting existing tutorials into Thimble

One thing that needs to be done is to take some of the great web game tutorials at sites like this one - https://phaser.io/learn

And try to bring them into an easily remixable format like this one - https://thimbleprojects.org/piratepete/334344/

The process would involve contacting the original authors to check they are supportive. And then adding the code into Thimble in a way that is easy to read and alter for learners. If you can identify a tutorial and adopt it for this process please do comment here.

How can we best support and interest driven / multiple path approach to making games

Any suggestions from educators and volunteers about how best to present our resources in a way that supports different pathways through the material, tools and activities that are part of the process of making web games?

There is a start of page on a wiki here that would be turn into more colorful resources. But how to do it without giving the impression that there is a set path to follow in a particular order?

Hugo theme design requested

Can anyone step forward to create or adapt a Hugo theme suitable to the project key themes?

The graphical style hashtags could be #fun, #techy, #crafty, #maker, #retrogames

Review wanted of Phaser Book

Hi there,

I've done a first draft of Part One of a book on learning how to code by making games here.
http://write.flossmanuals.net/learn-javascript-with-phaser/

It would be great to get feedback. What would you change? what's just wrong? what's missing?
Just do Part One if that's ok. I'll use your feedback in doing Part Two

Could you put your comments here
https://public.etherpad-mozilla.org/p/review-phaser-book

Feel free to edit typo/s or messy writing directly if you already have a log in, or email me if you don't.

Many thanks
Mick
