cope's Introduction

COPE - CORBA meets Perl

Here then is another alpha release of COPE as a Perl module. It is very
much a work in progress and not really intended for useful work.
However, if you would like to use Perl to script CORBA objects, you might
want to try this out and let me know what works and what doesn't.

Discussion, questions, etc: see http://www.lunatech.com/cope/ for details
about the mailinglist.

I'd also like to hear what you think of the choices I've made in my
language mapping.

    "Installation" instructions

To try out the test scripts, you'll need Perl version 5.004 or one of the
5.003_xx betas. I don't know exactly what value xx should have, but I
recommend 5.004 (or better 5.004_0x) anyway.

COPE uses one tiny part of the libnet package, so you'll need that as well.
The Exceptions make use of Experimental::Exception by Torsten Ekedahl.
I've placed Exception-0.95.tar.gz next to this archive on the www site.

If you want to compile your own IDL files, you'll also need an interface-
repository. The idl2perl script is hardwired to call irserv from OmniBroker.

After you've unpacked COPE-0.0x.tar.gz, simply do something like

    perl Makefile.PL
    make
    make test
    sudo make install

The test scripts are probably the most interesting at the moment. See
t/base.pl and t/COPE/Test_impl.pm together with Test.idl .
The CosNaming module is another example.

The biggest client application is idl2perl, the IDL to Perl compiler. It
starts the OmniBroker IR (see www.ooc.com) on the file IR.idl .
The compiler writes four files for every object it finds in the contents
of the Repository object to the directory "out".
