Yep, definitely. I was thinking about that myself because in my Chap3 update I am also referencing settings, but I have just been referencing the section e.g. Git or Git Extensions or Appearance, etc. I agree it would be better to reference each individual setting explicitly.

My only suggestion would be to prefix each setting ref with the section it is in e.g. for your example

.. _gitext-follow-renames:
.. _gitext-open-last:
.. _gitext-play-special:

etc. This will avoid name clashes with other settings (I was thinking of the Global and Local settings pages here).
