backbone-feedback's Issues

Higher taxon matches of fish

Higher taxon matches of fish

Andrew Bentley says all these names are correct, could we investigate why they are flagged.

Some are new names, but others aren't.

Also, the fuzzy matches in the same dataset, and the other fish one from KU.

How to remove "artificial accepted usage for a synonym"?

How to remove "artificial accepted usage for a synonym"?

"Carex pendula" was originally published in the "Global Register of Introduced and Invasive Species - Belgium", as an accepted name for "Carex agastachys": https://www.gbif.org/species/162644337. We have since (March 19) reverted back to the name "Carex agastachys" (keeping the same taxonID), since "Carex pendula" is the name of another native species to Belgium

On the backbone page for Carex pendula however, the Belgian register is still listed, with a reference to https://www.gbif.org/species/159747346, which states is a:

Artificial accepted usage for a synonym if its missing to preserve the taxonomic hierarchy.

Is there a way to remove this, so the Belgian register is no longer listed as a source for Carex pendula being introduced in Belgium?

Spelling variant for Chelone penstemon

Spelling variant for Chelone penstemon

We have received this feedback on Helpdesk:

If you check Linnaeus' 1753 Species Plantarum you will find that on your web site you have spelled one of Linnaeus' listed plant names incorrectly. On your web site at https://www.gbif.org/species/7652818 you have the name spelled, Chelone penstemon. Linnaeus spelled the plant name, Chelone pentstemon. Note that Linnaeus included a "t" in the first syllable.

Original "source" in description/distribution missing at backbone level

Original "source" in description/distribution missing at backbone level

Both the following checklist taxa have a source in distribution:

  • A: https://api.gbif.org/v1/species/117912551/descriptions?limit=1&offset=6 (http://marineinvade...)
  • B: https://api.gbif.org/v1/species/140563012/descriptions?limit=1&offset=1 (Wouters K (2002)...)

On the backbone level however:

  • A: source is name of dataset: https://api.gbif.org/v1/species/2225776/descriptions?limit=1&offset=6
  • B: source is empty: https://api.gbif.org/v1/species/2225776/descriptions?limit=1&offset=102

The same is true for source in distribution information.

I understand that it makes sense to make the source the name of the dataset at the backbone level, but why does it work for some and not for others?

Also, note that the source link on the checklist species pageis displayed as a (green) link that doesn't go anywhere. It would be good to parse thesource info for the first http link it encounters. That way DOIs provided in the source or sources that [are a URL](https://www.gbif.org/species/117912551)` will work.

Huge amounts of data with not even a kingdom

When you explore the records within this, there are a large number of seemingly good scientific names which need to be added or synonymised in the backbone. The map shows a good geographic coverage too.

This seems like it might prove to be a low cost area for decent improvement

Include Trichoptera World Checklist in backbone?

This is a suggestion from one of our publishers. They weren't able to find some of the species included in their dataset.
Would it be possible to get this checklist one GBIF (https://entweb.sites.clemson.edu/database/trichopt/) and include it in the backbone?

(Not sure if this is the correct place for this message).

All the named, extant species in this taxon, Mycetaulus costalis, M. hispanicus, M. latipennis, M. nigritellus, and M. polypori, also currently appear under Piophila.

Mycetaulus is sometimes (rarely) considered a subgenus of Piophila. The species Piophila asiaticus, P. bipunctatus, confusus, P. longipennis, and P. subdolus also belong to this (sub)genus. Wherever they end up, they should probably be kept together.

Incorrect date for name Morpho portis Hübner

We received a feedback message on Helpdesk concerning erroneous dates.

The user suspects that the year of "Morpho portis Hübner, 1916/24" in GBIF (https://www.gbif.org/species/5133232) should have actually been "1816/24". This year is the same as that of the Catalogue of Life (http://www.catalogueoflife.org/col/details/species/id/0a9f7b03f644fe0b51fd5d83b5d34384). In fact, Hübner was active at the beginning of the 1800's era. For example, in GBIF there are another species names "Morpho achillaena Hübner, 1816/24" (https://www.gbif.org/species/5133328) and "Morpho aega Hübner, 1816/24" (https://www.gbif.org/species/5133366). This seems correct.

After checking it seems the original record (from the NHM) has been mis-transcribed:
https://www.nhm.ac.uk/our-science/data/lepindex/detail/?taxonno=146497
The label clearly indicates 1816/24 as the date.

Dermestes species such as Dermestes maculatus are being incorrectly assigned to Curculionidae, when they should be in the Dermestidae family (refer to Catalogue of Life, ITIS, recent journal articles etc...). This issue was not occurring as of a month ago.

Perhaps this issue is occurring because Dermestes piniperda is a synonym of Tomicus piniperda which is a Curculionidae?

Apiomorpha minor has been synonymised with A. ovicola

In my 2017 publication (Mills, P. J., Gullan, P. J., & Cook, L. G. (2017). Nomenclatural changes in the Australasian gall-inducing genus Apiomorpha Rübsaamen (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Eriococcidae). Zootaxa, 4250(5), 484-488.) my co-authors and I revised the taxonomy of several species of Apiomorpha. Taxonomic implications of this paper include Brachyscelis minor (=Apiomorpha minor) has been synonymised with B. ovicola (=A. ovicola), and the accepted name of the species that was Apiomorpha ovicola is now A. floralis. Additionally, Brachyscelis glabra (= Apiomorpha glabra) has been treated as a nomen dubium.

Thank you for considering my corrections to keep the GBIF database up to date with these nomenclatural changes.

Yours sincerely,
Penelope Mills

Moreover, a species called Salicornia europaea` exists. This species has no authorship.

I wanted to know what is the practice in GBIF with such backbone errors, i.e., how long does it usualy take to correct such nomenclatural or taxonomical errors. I saw that some of the issues are open for more than a year now, but on the other hand some names that had incorrect taxonomy in april this year, are now corrected, e.g.:

Hippocrepis ciliata (https://www.gbif.org/species/5353690)
Luzula multiflora (https://www.gbif.org/species/2700934)
Polygonatum latifolium (https://www.gbif.org/species/7920718)

Considering that majority of mistakes come from CoL, you can see from the list that half of the names have already been corrected in CoL.

What if they are not correct in the CoL, but there is correct usage of the names in for example The Plant List database? When do you switch?

The Finnish name for th Aegopodium podagraria is Vuohenputki, not Keltapäivänkakkara. Several other plant names are incorrect, despite they are correct in iNat.

Vertebrata: Rhodophyta genus only?

Vertebrata: Rhodophyta genus only?

A cross-site search for "Vertebrata" returns Vertebrata S.F.Gray, 1821 in the Rhodophyta and four dataset (fish and newts). On a species search, two Genera are returned: the Rhodophyte one (accepted), and an Arthropod one (synonym). As a non-Linnean rank (subphylum of Chordata), Vertebrata is not contained in the structure, but the presentation of two lesser know genera with the omission of the well-known vertebrate group is rather confusing. Is there anything we could do about this?

Errors in taxon data: species/1672547 (=Systoechus ctenopterus)

Re: https://www.gbif.org/en/species/1672547 (=Systoechus ctenopterus)

The backbone record (apparently derived from Catalogue of Life: 2019 Annual Checklist) is a mess. I spotted at least the following mistakes:

  • Accepted name "Systoechus ctenopterus (Mikan, 1976) " -> should be (Mikan, 1796)
  • "Bombylius ctenopterus Mikan, 1787" -> I could find no such description, the oldest description seems to be 1796, matching the accepted name
  • Basionym: "Bombylius ctenopterus Mikan, 1787" -> should be Mikan, 1796
  • "Systoechus ctenophorus (Mikan, 1796)" -> No such name seems to occur in MIkan 1796, nor it is recognised in the World Catalogue. This seems to be a later misspelling.

Here is the corresponding record from
Evenhuis, N. L., & Greathead, D. J. (1999). World Catalog of Bee Flies (Diptera: Bombyliidae). Leiden: Backhuys Publishers. Retrieved from http://hbs.bishopmuseum.org/bombcat/
