This is the repo for the Python for astronomy workshop.

All content (presentation slides, tutorials, ...) should go to the master branch, except for the website, which is in the gh-pages branch.

conda install instructions for gammapy tutorial

@kingj90 - Telling people to do this with gammapy_pygamma15.yaml doesn't work:

$ conda env create -f gammapy_pygamma15.yaml
Fetching package metadata: ..........
Error: No packages found in current osx-64 channels matching: cairo 1.12.18 4

You have to restrict the list to packages to what's really needed, not all you have.

My suggestion would be that we just say "you need gammapy dev version and Sherpa" and help them afterwards to install this and improve instructions for conda. So for a lot of people it will be a demo, but @adonath and I can also show people how to do stuff.

Fork or Push?

Hi,

I'd like to stick my notebook in the repository. Would you like me to fork the repo and send a pull request or should I have permission to push to the repo directly (I thought I had access but not sure).

Gammapy tutorial

I've written down a first plan for the Gammapy tutorial at the workshop:
https://github.com/gammapy/2015-MPIK-Workshop/blob/gh-pages/tutorials/gammapy/README.md

It's pretty ambitious, but I think possible if we keep at it in the coming weeks.
Roughly this needs to be done:

Simulate some HESS or CTA data.
Implement and make a tutorial for making images
Implement and make a tutorial for making and fitting spectra
Write a Python script that participants can run, that checks if everything we need is installed and working.
Finish writing the tutorial README page, add some more infos and also a rough time schedule for the 90 minutes.

@adonath @kingj90 @peger089 - Sounds like a plan? Or did you have something else in mind for the Gammapy tutorial?
