The FRont End Developers' Meetup. FRED stands for FRont End Developers, and is (as far as we can tell) the first multi-city meetup for front-end devs. FRED provides an outlet for front-end developers to talk and share about this exciting and crucial new craft.

Update Rake Commands for Jekyll v1.0

So Jekyll v1.0 is out and the rake file needs some serious updating to avoid a few errors when these tasks are executed. I'll list what these are later on today. Just wanted to give a quick FYI in case others see these.

Manchester picture

The Manchester page is currently using a picture of CoworkBuffalo, the space where BfloFRED is hosted.

I know McrFRED hasn't met yet, so it may be hard to have a picture, but I figure it's good to make a note of this so you remember to take a picture to use for the site after your first meetup!

Having trouble viewing site locally

Deleted the repo and cloned again but getting:
_vendor/sass/susy = dirty
and
Syntax error: File to import not found or unreadable: ../_vendor/sass/susy/sass/susy.

Any ideas?
Ta.

Rake Errors

when I run rake I'm getting this error from the CLI.

/System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/rubygems.rb:777:in `report_activate_error': Could not find RubyGem compass (>= 0) (Gem::LoadError)
    from /System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/rubygems.rb:211:in `activate'
    from /System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/rubygems.rb:1056:in `gem'
    from /usr/bin/compass:22

also this too

WARN Could not determine content-length of response body. Set content-length of the response or set Response#chunked = true

Time to Update FRED

In light of our outdated stuff like ruby and jekyll it's time to do an overhaul.

Things we need to update/change…

  • Jekyll 1.4.2
  • Add Normalize using bower
  • Remove Susy and replace it with CSS Wizardry Grids
  • Add Typeplate Sass port
  • Update Compass and Sass. (Do we need Compass?)
  • Update Rake Commands or replace entirely with new implementation
  • Update Ruby dependency to ruby-2.0.0-p247 [ x86_64 ]
  • Gemfile needs updating to newest versions of this projects dependencies

New group logos

I've pushed up a change that removes the background hex behind each group logo. McrFRED and TorFRED had both included it in their logo file already, and it looked a little wonky, so it made sense to kill it. Additionally, this will let groups be more creative about color, texture, etc. in their group's hexagon.

As a result, the logos are now being sized considerably larger: 250px x 250px, and are blurring. We should get higher-res assets in place for all the group logos, plus a hexified version of the BfloFRED logo.

I'd also like to ask McrFRED to only upload the small hex portion of their logo (the mcr bit). In theory, by having the individual hexes from every group, at some point in the near future we can replicate the linking hexes with CSS on every FRED group page. Plus some other cool effects.

Scheduling Widget For Sessions

We need some sort of widget that can display times and schedules for FRED meet ups. We may even need someone that can do Ruby Development to allow FREDS to create schedules dynamically :\

Job Board

So today I got a bit of a solicitation to BfloFRED on Twitter for a job outside the Buffalo area. For some reason this bothers me. Maybe FRED should have a job board listing and a twitter account for this type of shit? Thoughts?

FRED organization

Right now, the copyright for the FRED name and design materials in Github are held by my company, Van Patten Media. (See LICENSE.md)

I'm fine with keeping it that way as long as necessary, but I think it's worth looking into what it would take to get a proper non-profit organisation built to hold those copyrights, hold the FRED bank account (presumably there will be sponsorships to come), etc.

There will probably be a bit of legwork involved in this, but I think it's necessary for the future growth of FRED.

Thoughts?

rake new_fred command

Just to double check:

Add your city with:
rake new_fred

As an example would that be,
rake manchester_fred
or
rake new_fred manchester?

Updating .scss file

Getting the following error using LiveReload:

style.scss
[31m[0m[31m error[0m _sass/style.scss (Line 9 of _sass/layout/_fred-head.scss: Undefined mixin 'span-columns'.)
[31m[0m

_fred-head.scss
Nothing to compile. If you're trying to start a new project, you have left off the directory argument.
Run "compass -h" to get help.

Design

The site needs a design!

I'm going to rough out a layout idea I have with Susy, and maybe we can take it from there?

Groups having their own full site outside of fredup should include the fredup logo

We will need to include within the readme or the home page of fredup (I like that better), a portion of text explaining that if any groups have their own full site outside of fredup that they include the fredup logo somewhere within the site. Of course we link to the fredup logo from the fredup site. Did I say fredup too many times there?
