org.videolan.vlc's Issues

VLC fails to validate root certificates for HTTPS network streams

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open VLC
  2. Go to Media: Open Network Stream …
  3. Type in any HTTPS media file from any certificate issuer (example https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/transcoded/5/5f/DollyZoomTest.ogv/DollyZoomTest.ogv.480p.webm)
  4. Click Play

Expected:

Should be able to validate against known root certificates in the Flatpak runtime.

Actual:

VLC doesn’t know about any root certificates so the user has to manually accept the certificate each time they want to play a network stream.

Notes:

The GlobalSign root used in the above example are included in at least org.freedesktop.Platform/x86_64/1.6, org.freedesktop.Platform.Compat32/x86_64/1.6, org.freedesktop.Sdk/x86_64/1.6, and org.gnome.Platform/x86_64/3.26.

VLC unable to save to local file system, output says "read-only file system"

Title sums up the problem.

While reproducing, terminal output gives me this (ignore the Norwegian, it just says that it's starting the GUI):
VLC media player 3.0.0 Vetinari (revision 3.0.0-30-gef4c265336) [0000000000763f00] main libvlc: Køyrer VLC med standardgrensesnittet. Bruk «cvlc» for å bruka VLC utan grensesnitt. STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  1. Open terminal and run 'flatpak run org.videolan.VLC' or run it from an app menu
  2. Press Ctrl+L to show the playlist view
  3. Drag and drop some media files onto the playlist (or right-click and select Add a file...)
  4. Press Ctrl+Y to save the playlist (or go to Media → Save playlist to file...)
  5. Save the playlist to the local filesystem.
  6. No error in GUI is shown, but playlist is not saved.

Ubuntu 18.04: crash libQt5Gui when accessing Media -> Open File

Using flatpak from @alexlarsson ppa:

autoreconf ?

Any reason to explicitly force autoreconf on most of the libs ?
I have nothing of the sort in my build and all is working.

VLC does not start anymore

After the latest update of VLC, it does not start anymore, giving instead the following error.

$ flatpak run org.videolan.VLC
bwrap: Can't mkdir /usr/lib/sdk: Read-only file system

My system is Silverblue 29.20190104.0. I experienced the same error with MkvToolnix and suspect that it is related to the KDE 5.12 runtime, however I was unsure how to test or where to report.

VLC 3.0 quits when doing : Playback -> Renderer

Hi,

I just installed VLC form flathub in fedora 27 x86-64
VLC quits silently each time I click on "Playback" then move the cursror over "Renderer".

Native fedora's VLC (from RPMfusion) does not quit like that (but Chromecast is sitll not working there either, showing Selected "Local" and greyed "Scanning..." in "Rendered" submenu)

Full log, from launching VLC to going to Renderer submenu :

VLC switched to QT?

Recently it seems that VLC switched to QT? On Gnome it used to fit perfectly with the Gnome theming, but now it's switched, it seems, to be completely QT driven.

Was this on purpose?

vlc in flatpak completely hangs my pc

everytime i play a file on my pc with vlc the computer completely freezes...seems that is related to vdpau drivers...while the rpm version tells me i don't have vdpau drivers and can't use them (then the file starts to play) the flatpak one just freezes my pc...maybe i need to install these drivers?

just in case i am using fedora 26 workstation...

unfortunately cmq seems the app freezes my pc this screen is the only info i can give you

When I hit the "update" button in gnome-software, I get these issues in the journal. My first guess is that they could be VLC related, as I'm not getting those issues for any of the other flatpaks in my system.

VLC exits after flashing a title with Privacy and Network Access Policy in Ubuntu 16.04 32-bit

First of all thank you for developing flatpak environment and adding vlc to repo.
I installed vlc with flatpak install --user flathub org.videolan.VLC command.
When I tried to run it like flatpak run org.videolan.VLC, it exits immediately after a gui flashes a title with "Privacy and Network Access Policy" then it disappears. I searched for it on the net, some say that it's a bug related to vlc when you launch it first time, and suggested a workaround by launching it like

 flatpak run org.videolan.VLC --no-qt-privacy-ask

That way suppresses the dialog, however vlc still keeps exiting.
I hope you help me.
Regards.
Kenn.

VLC can't play from external hard drive

VLC only works if the video is from /home.

I have multiple hard drives on my PC, and I cannot play from the others HDDs or from any USB HDD.

This is what I get:

File reading failed:
VLC could not open the file "/run/media/alexandre/f14881f5-2376-4efc-b4df-b1a44a5f12a4/video.mp4" (No such file or directory).
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'file:///run/media/alexandre/f14881f5-2376-4efc-b4df-b1a44a5f12a4/video.mp4'. Check the log for details.

If I click on "Media > Open File" go to "Other Locations" it doesn't show any mounted HDD, except the drive from the OS.

I'm using OpenSUSE Leap 42.3 with Gnome.

Java support for blu-ray menus?

I'm not sure whether this is a bug report or a feature request but blu-ray menus don't work for me. At least not the ones that require java, which is the large majority.

When loading a blu-ray disc (with java menus), I get this error:
"libbluray demux error: BD-J menus not supported. Playing without menus. BD-J support: 1, JVM found: 0, JVM usable: 0"

I have java installed on my system but I'm guessing that, being packaged as a flatpak, vlc wouldn't be able to see it anyway. Is there any possibility of fixing/adding support for java blu-ray menus?

edited for clarity

I have installed the org.videolan.VLC.Plugin.makemkv and org.videolan.VLC.Plugin.bdj plugins,

Use KDE Sdk

I have done kind of the same work here:
kinvolk-archives/vlc-flatpak#19
I'll open some bugs/PR for the differences that I find useful.

First one, any reason to not use the KDE Sdk as a base ?
If you agree with the principle I can do a PR.

can't save subtitles

works with non-flatpak vlc
doesnt work with flatpak vlc
vlc is not allowed to save the subtitle file with flatpak

Any ideas?

VLC interface way too big

VLC interface way too big, icons and text resolution is low.

I have NVidia and Intel grahpics cards, on my laptop,

org.freedesktop.Platform.GL.nvidia-390-48/x86_64/1.4

I have installed other applications an they work fine.

(VLC-Flatpak) VLC doesn't start as long as Xwayland is not running

Hi,

Here is a always reproductible one that I've found :

On my Debian Sid GNOME-Wayland system, I've started to try the experimental function from GNOME 3.34 (I'm running GNOME 3.34.2) that allows Xwayland to start on demand :
$ gsettings set org.gnome.mutter experimental-features "['autostart-xwayland']"
(see https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=GNOME-3.34-Mutter-X-On-Demand)

Here what I've noticed :

  • As long as XWayland is not running, VLC-Flatpak doesn't start.
  • As soon as XWayland is running, VLC-Flatpak can be started.
  • Launch VLC-Flatpak and then later start XWayland : VLC-Flatpak finally appears on my desktop.

By comparison, VLC deb package from Debian repos can start without Xwayland.

How I've tested :
I've checked that my system starts without Xwayland by checking my processes
To start Xwayland, I've launched an X11-application (like Thunderbird or Firefox from Debian repos) which consequently starts Xwayland which consequently allow VLC-Flatpak to start.
I've checked that Xwayland was running by checking my processes.

Note that LibreOffice-Flatpak suffers from the same bug : https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=131623

I'm running VLC-Flatpak up to date from FlatHub :
Version 3.0.8 [email protected] Feb 26 2020 00:20:31

Thanks

When opening a file from GUI and closing it, sometimes it VLC start from GUI again until computer reboot.

I always close windows with Alt+f4.

When opening and closing video files through Nautilus, sometimes (when purposely testing, then usually after 3-6 times) VLC doesn't open again.
Killing it doesn't help. It won't open by open from Gnome Activities search, it won't open when trying to open a file.

Interestingly, regardless of whether you kill vlc, it always opens from the CLI with flatpak run org.videolan.VLC.

Running with -vvv after an incident:

icon disappears from systray on screen lock/unlock

When using the 'show systray icon' and minimize to systray, the icon is gone after a screen lock/unlock. The app does continue playback. I cannot really see anything relevant in de journal logs.
I am using fedora 29 and up until recently it worked. Not quite sure when it stopped working.

Cannot load .ass subtitles file located on a samba share

When I open a video with an .ass file placed with it (with the same name) both located on a samba share, the subtitle file will not get autoloaded when opening the video. The video works fine. Moreover, if I try to add the subtitle track manually (Right click -> subtitles -> Add Subtitle File...) VLC will just hang. Then I can only kill it and nothing else.

Flatpak-VLC: open a video, close it immediately and open another video broke VLC.

Note:
This issue was originally reported to flatpak, https://github.com/flatpak/flatpak/issues/2208#issue-367577331

Linux distribution and version
Fedora 28

Flatpak version
1.0.3

Description of the problem
I use VLC through flatpak.
The problem I noticed appear when I open a video, recognise it is the wrong one and close it immediately, then click on another video and... nothing happen.
VLC seems dead.
When I check the system activity there are vlc related program in execution, but clicking on a video file doesn't trigger the player (see attached screenshot) or the player doesn't work any more.
To solve the problem I need to kill those process.
vlc_flatpack_problem

Note: if you do not change the video file and try to open again the same file you closed one second ago, it works. If you pick another video, it doesn't work.

Steps to reproduce
open video A and close VLC after some seconds
open video B... nothing happens
kill the vlc related process
open video B and vlc starts without problem.

Request
VLC in flatpak format should manage the workflow above without problems as well as the "legacy" installation.

VLC can not play videos from a Samba share with external subtitles (SRT file)

Hi
I have VLC 3.0.3 on two computers running Arch Linux (Gnome 3.28.2 and KDE Plasma 5.13 beta),
VLC can not show subtitles from a SRT file located in a Samba share. No problem with video/audio playback and there is no problem with subtitles when the playback is done locally.
VLC 3.0.2 installed form Arch repositories plays the same video with subtitles as expected.

cannot open VLC

Hi
I use Arch Linux running flatpak 1.1.2, KDE Plasma 5.14.4 desktop environment.
"flatpak run app/org.videolan.VLC/x86_64/stable" command in terminal gives me the following error:
bwrap: Can't find source path /run/user/1000/doc/by-app/org.videolan.VLC: No such file or directory
