The current way of generating image pixels doesn't simulate the way eyes/cameras see properly. x and y coordinates in the image are assumed to be directly corresponding to horizontal/vertical angles, which isn't true in the usual projections (not even taking into account all the various lens distortions).

This assumption is very useful for generating the image quickly, so it should not be given up entirely. Instead, the result of generation with such an assumption should be distorted at the end in order to fit the proper projection.

Generate better looking images by using shading with directional lighting.

Currently the simulator can only show what the terrain looks like. Add an option to define objects like cuboids, cylinders or even just billboards (flat rectangles with a "texture") that could be placed in view and rendered together with the terrain.

Add a graphical interface (GTK based?) for all the basic functionalities.

Should be optional, the program should still work just as a command line utility.
