Nice project. Some end user suggestions:

• Add a little bit of documentation in your main page, i.e. how non-techies can know the basics to contribute with historical data: which file needs to be updated? ... and things like that
• Also a bit info about navigation on timeline: keyboard shortcuts, mouse/touchscreen usage, target devices (guess this is not going to work on mobile)
• I think some kind of legend is needed: for people who don't nothing about the subject it's not possible to know that a given person's name in a part of timeline is a politician or an architect, so it would be great to see a fixed or pop-up legend to identify each category
