Allow to automatically set (and un-set on exit) the display cutout developer option

To be able to use my external display fully while in the screen mirroring mode (to remove rounded corners and a black bar on one side of the screen) I am enabling the Waterfall cutout option under Display cutout in the Developer options. Would it be possible to automate the action of enabling and disabling this option with a SecondScreen profile? I think this is similar to the existing "freeform" toggle automation. Here's an article about the android version that added the setting I'm talking about, with screenshots: link

Tengo un problema con mi 3070Ti, al lanzar el render en davinci resolve la tarjeta se pone todo el rato al 100% y esto hace que el rende saque errores en el archivo final. No es cuestión que tarde mas o menos, si no que simplemente no lo saca.
Formatee el pc de limpio todo y actualice todo a la ultima versión, los archivos con lo que me da el problema son de una sony A7IV en h265 10bit 4.2.0 (se que es muy comprimido pero no creía que no llegaría a sacar un render)...

Feature request: Profile-specific launcher setting

On my device running an unofficial LineageOS build, Taskbar often produces odd behaviors, and I ended up using Trebuchet when connected to a display. It would be nice to be able to choose a specific launcher for each profile, e. g., Trebuchet for external displays and UnLauncher when there is no display connected.

The current version either sets Taskbar as the Home app, or unsets the default. Unsetting the default could be replaced with choosing one from the available launchers.

Thank you for all the work you've put in SecondScreen, it is an excellent tool.

Overscan Limitations Woes

I'm not sure what, if anything can be done about this, however I'll put it up regardless, at the very least for future reference.

I have an old 1080p Pilot TV from around a decade ago, which is on its way to the grave (though that could be completely unrelated to this), and has a pretty horrible overscan (with SecondScreen values needing to be set to 40, for both top and bottom (that are somehow controlled by the Right and Left variables) with no option to fix (perhaps with a technician remote, however I could not find any solution to this model, which appears to have never received proper support), though that is only useful for portrait mode), and I just got myself a USB-C to HDMI converter (relying on USB alternate mode (requiring at least DisplayPort 1.1a) for testing with my Razer Phone 2 (still on stock until I find time to flash a custom ROM).

Unfortunately, there appears to be only so much SecondScreen can do with Android's limitations (perhaps with root things will be better), since the overscan settings only help with the current orientation (perhaps separate settings for portrait and landscape could help, though that would bring in it's own challenges, since it would essentially mean changing the display preferences each time the orientation would change, which could be annoying to some), and media apps such as VLC, which stream the content to the display, would have the profile completely ignored while streaming (casting) the content (at least with VLC there is a manual override to just clone the display, which respects the set profile).

In short, the current limitations I have personally seen:

• Overscan compensation is limited to the current settings, which are only truly ideal for one orientation at a time.
• Profile settings are ignored when casting.

Change aspect ratio

Hi there.

Is it possible to add an option to change the aspect ratio from the phone's default to 16:9? It would be something similar as Samsung's Smart View app does when you mirror the screen.

This could be useful when you only want to mirror the screen for watching a movie or serie (from Netflix, Amazon Prime video or weather app used) and avoid black bars at the top and bottom of the TV due to different aspect ratio between phone and TV

I think this option is less intrusive than changing resolution.

Integration with taskbar

Hi !

First allow me to thank you for your great work. Your apps are very useful !

I have a fresh install of LineageOS 16 with microG on my Zenfone3, and I have a ZenScreen Go as for an external monitor. SecondScreen 2.9.2 is installed along side with Taskbar 6.2, both from F-Droid.
Before this fresh new install I also had SecondScreen+Taskbar on LineageOS without miroG and everything worked very well : when SecondScreen launched the profile Taskbar was launched too.
Now, in my SecondScreen profile, I don't see the "Taskbar" in profil setting anymore, although I have checked "change default launcher"
As there is no import/export I could not backup the profile.
So now SecondScreen launches the default profile but taskbar is not enabled I don't know what I am missing.

No DPI setting allowed at 1080p

I'm using /e/ OS on a Galaxy Note 9 (A10) and no matter what DPI I choose to use with a 1080p resolution I get a message "to protect your device, SecondScreen will not allow you to use this resolution/density"

Secondscreen keyboard doesn't show notification

When changing keyboard to secondscreen it doesn't show notification to switch back to original software keyboard.

Use Miracast Presentation Mode to extend the android phone display

Here is a paper that says it's possible to do. It would be great if your app could do it, that way I could watch a video on the TV screen while using my phone normally (like you can do with the YouTube app).

Black bar on left border

First off, SecondScreen is awesome. It makes using my Huawei Mate 20 X with a USB-C to HDMI dongle and a large 1080p TV so much nicer.

Setting he resolution to 1080p, lowering DPI, and forcing landscape, works great except for one issue. In phone mode (as opposed to Huawei's special desktop mode), there is a black bar running up and down the left border of the screen, about 100px wide.

The black border has nothing to do with overscan (which I've disabled). I know this because the Android mouse can be seen hovering over it if I move the mouse to the left edge. It's just that no apps will be drawn in the 100px gap. It almost seems the black bar reserving space for a non-existent status bar.

It's probably a bug with Huawei's Android 9, but is there any way to fix it with SecondScreen?

Preserve user's current DPI setting to be applied when disabling activated profile

Hi! Great app, thank you

I use my phone with the setting in Settings -> Display -> Screen Zoom set to minimum. After enabling a SecondScreen profile, and then disabling the profile, this setting is re-set to a default value. I would like my custom setting to be remembered while I use SecondScreen, and restored when I stop, would that be possible?

Recent Apps button lost on Android Pie

On Android 8 with my Pixel XL, I had 3 button on the bottom bar, the back button and the home button on the left side of the bottom bar, and the resent apps button on the right side. With the upgrade to Android 9, the recent apps button has disappeared.

I was able to add the recent button to Taskbar as a workaround. Thank you for that.

Output video on display has very small font even if I set phone font to LARGE. Please help!

Hello! I am using SecondScreen on an Asus ROG 5 phone. I am using the app primarily to set the output video to my Epson Moverio BT-40 Smartglasses at 1920 x 1080p. Works great but even if I have the phone's displayed font at LARGE, the resulting video's font in my BT-40 glasses is very small. Is there any way to make the font larger on the video output?

this app screwed the phone screen

Just installed the app on a Xiaomi Mi 8 stock rom, rooted. Created a profile and the screen was shrinked to the center of the display. I can't touch any button. I have uninstalled the app from adb pm uninstall but still the screen is unusable and shrinked. I can only reflash my phone. Disappointed.

Support for multiple simulated displays

Android 10+ can simulate up to 4 displays with Force Desktop mode enabled. scrcpy can be used to access them separately. Currently, I open apps to a specific display manually through adb because Taskbar currently only launches apps on one specific display (or sometimes unpredictable).

Sample to simulate 4 displays with Full HD resolution and 160 dpi:

Feature Request; auto start when disconnecting from display.

I frequently change resolution on my note 9 so it looks normal on my tv but i would love for it to have an option to auto start a different profile when the phone is disconnected from hdmi.

SecondScreen works poorly on Goolge Pixel 3 XL with Andriid 9.

Without "notch compatilibity" checkbox it leaves ugly black bar. With "notch compatibility" messes with touch screen area, exchanges landscape and portrait mode. It is also tricky to turn off profile (even by rebooting) (#62) when notch compat is set.

Notch compatibility mode forces wrong aspect ratio; makes device unresponsive

Using the option creates a tiny landscape screen in a portrait phone, and the touchscreen is entirely unresponsive. In that state, I can only escape by long-pressing the power button.

However, the whole notch problem can be solved by going to the settings and choosing the option to hide the notch. Maybe that could be a better solution? The app has permission to modify system settings anyway.

Auto start & Crome tabs

It has an auto start mode when connecting a second screen, but it doesnt auto start when starting mirror casting to Chromecast,
Is there a way to do this?

And when I disable second screen, Google chrome tabs on top of the screen are gone, only fixes when restarting my device, what can I do about that?

My LG Velvet 5G can ouput up to 4K resolution but only at 30Hz.
My goal is to use 1080p 60Hz on 4K TV's
I don't own a 4K TV but for my testing I'm trying to use a 720p resolution on my Full HD PC monitor.

The image displayed on on my monitor actually change when I activate 720p in SecondScreen.
My wallpaper is streched differently and I can see that dpi setting has changed.
But when I go in my monitor settings and show display informations it says that the video signal is still 1080p.

To output the video signal of my phone I'm using a Steam Deck Dock and using the HDMI ouput. Not the DisplayPort ouput.

I used the adb method on my Linux PC to grant SecondScreen system permissions acces.
adb shell pm grant com.farmerbb.secondscreen.free android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS

I have tried a couple of settings in SecondScreen and I was not successful to obtain a true 720p resolution on my setup. That means that it would not work on a 4K TV too.

If there is a solution to this problem that would be very nice.

How do I turn off SecondScreen's profile from adb shell?

Sometimes SecondScreen prevents using touchscreen (touchable area gets heavily desynched from visible area), so pressing "Turn off" button becomes a problem.

Even after rebooting the device the profile remains on until I unlock the device for the first time (auto-start programs don't auto-start until I unlock). And typing PIN or sliding the slider is not possible due to touchscreen effectively being mangled.

There should be a way to turn off profile from adb shell. Additionally it would be nice to have automatic profile turn off after countdown if confirmation button is not pressed.

Samsung TV Screen mirroring crashing after trying to use it with SecondScreen

After trying out SecondScreen 2.9.2 with a Samsung UE55F8090SL 139,7 cm (55 Zoll) Full HD Smart-TV via its Screen Mirroring functionality, it does not work anymore without SecondScreen also.

I have used the default profile, using 1920x1080 with 240dpi (not sure if the DPI matches).

The crash happens right after the Screen Cast connection is established, and the TV just says the connection is ended ("Screen Mirroring wurde beendet" in German).
Android still displays the cast icon from the Wfd service for several seconds then.

It looks more like a bug with the TV than SecondScreen of course, but I wonder what might have caused this: is the TV in an unhappy state now after some unsupported DPI was tried on it? Wouldn't only the resolution matter after all?

And since this keeps happening after having uninstalled SecondScreen, and not having used autostart since the initial failure, I wonder if there is some state/setting changed in Android that might still cause it to crash like that.

I am using Android 10, and have tried it after rebooting both the phone and the TV.
I have not yet tested it with another phone/device, but it was working just before trying out SecondScreen, which I wanted to use for improving the mirroring experience.

With newer versions and/or variants, might be a good idea to mention that if the adb shell pm grant com.farmerbb.secondscreen.free android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS fails with a message about the current user not having permissions to grant, that they might need to enable/disable another flag within the Developer Options section.

In the case of OnePlus phones it's called "Disable permission monitoring" but other brands might use other wording.

Orientation, forced portrait mode, HDMI output landscape fail

I'm trying to Output portrait mode so that I can rotate my larger monitor vertically while mirroring. However the HDMI output always shows portrait output. I need the HDMI output to remain in landscape mode while displaying and unrotated version of portrait orientation. So that I may manually rotate the monitor myself resulting in a vertical full-screen picture. Please let me know how to fix the issue

In the app the information box is not clear how to give permissions via adb and the line is incorrect as it does not have a space between "free" and "android":
"pm grant com.farmerbb.secondscreen.freeandroid.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS"
should be:
"pm grant com.farmerbb.secondscreen.free android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS"

The instructions should be:
Enable Developer settings -> USB debugging on your device and enter in your PC terminal

sudo adb start-server
sudo adb shell pm grant com.farmerbb.secondscreen.free android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS

first launch, back to Autorotate fail, but OK after reboot

First, thank you for this useful app.
At the first launch, I create a desktop profile, connect the screen, everything is ok, but when I disconnect the screen, the device stay locked in landscape.
But this issue disappear after one reboot.
(rebooting the device after SecondScreen installation doesn't fix, it need a first use, get the issue then reboot the device)

I'm using second screen on my Galaxy Note 8 and every time I reboot my device it returns with the wrong DPI (neither the original, neither the one I set on second screen).

To return to the right one I need to run second screen, load a profile and then stop it.

Feature request: trackpad / mouse mode instead of touch mode

SecondScreen would become even more useful if it could offer a mouse or trackpad mode. What I mean is this: when you connect your smartphone to a second (bigger) display, the smaller phone display shouldn't be in the regular touch mode, but in trackpad mode (with a transparent/invisible and fullscreen trackpad layer activated), so that you can control the mouse on the big screen with your phone screen as a trackpad (comparable with Samsung Dex, except that the display is still mirrored). This works already in RDP sessions with Microsoft Remote Desktop (which includes its own Mouse Mode), but it would be extremely useful if we could use this trackpad mode with everything in Android.

What comes close to achieving this functionality is the third party app 'Trackpad: big phone mouse', which basically adds a transparent trackpad layer to the screen, but that app leaves annoying traces. Does anyone know a better alternative, or even better: could @farmerbb include this functionality in the SecondScreen app itself?
