Confirmed.
Opening this page as a normal webpage works fine, only when using chrome-extension:// I get this issue. The calls to the iframe don't work.

Maybe there's some permission we can opt-in to?

It's because the overlay page uses an inline script tag which is not allowed in an extension. There is no permission to override it. :/ I guess we can only hope they change it upstream to use src attributes. Probably not worth fixing for now. Let's just move the test page else where at some point.
