As of the latest update, I am able to add the non-numeric sms user, but I the
notification is not triggered.

I should also mention that I am on android 2 (motodroid)

Can you check if custom notifications work for regular SMS's (from phone
numbers) on
Droid with the latest version (v1.0.3)? I wasn't sure about this.

But otherwise there definitely is an issue when receiving sms's from emails,
will take
a look at this when I get a chance.

Ok version 1.0.4 (just posted to Market but also available here) now should
have
support for email->sms gateways, of course I have no way to test this
unfortunately
so give it a go and let me know.

You should see the "from" field on the popup converted to a contact name (if
available) as well as custom contact notifications _should_ theoretically work.

What I'm not sure about is what happens if you click "reply":
-for quick replies I'm relatively sure it will error out
-for regular replies it should take you to the messaging app with the contact email
populated in the "to" field but I'm not sure if this will send correctly (won't
messages sent "to" emails be converted to MMS?)

Custom notification seemed to work for me (only did one test) This is not an
SMS I
can reply to so I can not test the reply features.

Actually it would be nice to choose the way to reply.
Something like:
Click on reply => List of { sms, email, gtalk, etc... }

Feature request?

cmgrant: if you could test a few more that would be good. and you mean it
worked
with a sms from a email->sms gateway right?

macarse: not sure if you've seen the new Quick Contact API in Android 2.0 - its
pretty cool, you can add it to your app and it basically pops up a little mini
dialog
with all the ways you can contact that user (you can try it on Android 2.0 emu)
...
the real beauty is 3rd party apps can add to this easily (like Facebook adds
itself
in there if you have them as a FB contact). There's a screenshot of it here:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-2.0-highlights.html

Plus if you watch the Android 2.0 highlights video there is a demo.

Unfortunately it's not backward compatible, doh.

Yes it work with an sms from an email->sms gateway. I received about 10 more
messages
in today and all of them were successful.

Great, thanks. What about replies? Or do you mostly use email->sms gateways
read
notifications only?

In my case, read only. Nagios doesnt accept responses. Thanks for making this
work
btw :) and in a rather fast fashion :)

I can only read as well. It is just a notification from an external voice mail
system, so I can not test out the reply feature either.
