Update readme

Readme shows the information related to the template used to create this repository. Information should be updated. It should say:

• What this repository is about
• How to contribute
• Useful links to esmvaltool pages

Change Custom domain

Now the Custom domain in settings/pages is https://esmvalgroup.github.io/ESMValTool-website. It can be https://esmvaltool.org/, learn more.

Add a check for links

A github workflow can be added to check all links, something like github-action-markdown-link-check.

Move presentations and tutorials from community readme to website

Currently, the "presentations" website is out of date, instead being maintained on the Community GitHub README. During the last User Engagement Team meeting it was discussed the possibility to move the "presentations" and "tutorials" tables from the Community GitHub README to the website, so they are up to date and maintained in only one place.

Add icon links to Github and X (Twitter) in footer

1. Add ESMValTool Github and X (Twitter) icon links in footer.

Organize markdown files

Can markdown files in the root directory be organized in a folder like pages?

Add ACCESS-NRI team and tutorial content

1. Add ACCESS-NRI to 'Team' page under 'Core Development Team'
2. Add link to ACCESS-NRI Training series (youtube) on 'Tutorial' page
3. Update 'Tutorial' page title and menu button to 'Tutorials' (now that there are multiple tutorials available)

Updating road map

The road map (mid- and long-term strategy) is updated in this branch: https://github.com/ESMValGroup/ESMValTool-website/tree/update_roadmap

Fix license file

The license file LICENSE is related to the template. There is also a license.md file that is used for the content of the website. The file name should be changed, because license.md is recognized by GitHub as a license of this repository.

Update github templates

Templates issue_template and pull_request_template should be updated, removing information related to beautiful-jekyll

Out of date link to website on GitHub repository

On the right panel of the GitHub repository it still shows the old link to the website (https://esmvalgroup.github.io/ESMValTool-website) instead of the shorter new link (https://esmvaltool.org/).

Add Galytska et al., 2023 to the list of of Publications with results from the ESMValTool

A recently published study by Galytska et al., 2023 uses ESMValTool. I suggest adding it to the list of Publications with results from the ESMValTool. https://esmvaltool.org/publications/

Create a clear location + pathway to start with ESMValTool for new users in the main menu.

Create a clear location + pathway to start with ESMValTool for new users in the main menu. This would ideally contain any information related to getting started (e.g. downloading ESMValTool, links to documentation and tutorials).

1. Rename main header menu item 'DOWNLOAD' to 'GET STARTED'.
2. Create 'Download' button item in 'GET STARTED' submenu
3. Move 'Tutorials' button item from 'ESMVALTOOL' submenu to 'GET STARTED' submenu.
4. Move 'Documentation' button from 'ESMVALTOOL' submenu to 'GET STARTED' submenu.

Based on @ehogan 's suggestions: This new 'GET STARTED' submenu can also include a dedicated 'Quick-start guide' (or similarly named) page that can give some very initial directions to new users on where to go next based on their needs.

Updating References section

Updating the References from https://esmvaltool.org/references/

Create direct link button for docs in main header menu

Create a new button called "DOCUMENTATION" in the main header menu that links directly to https://docs.esmvaltool.org/en/latest/ to fast/easy access for users (1-click).

Roadmap page is stale

The roadmap page has not been updated with project info in a long while, which suggests that it is a hard thing to keep up to date.

I propose that instead we:

1. Host and link to the the long-term ESMValTool strategy. This is higher level and longer-term than the original aim of the roadmap page.
2. link to GitHub issues for ESMValTool and ESMValCore, to cover the more specific developments that are planned.

When: recommendation would be to do this once we have agreed version 1 of the strategy document.

Missing fonts error during Jekyll build.

Error:

Fix
Add missing fonts to 'assets/webfonts/'
