Site build Process

This is a site build on React and Gatsby framework with a pre-template. Before this assignment, I have very minimum understand over web development, including programming languages like html, javascript, css, and this is also the biggest challenge in this project for me. The first step is what we have discussed in class about the information architecture of a personal website. With the advice from professor and other students from class, I was able to to start this project at a right spot. It's mainly a learning process, in which I went through the basic React and Gatsby, html, and javascript tutorial from the documentation online. In the development stage, I learned some of the basic usage of gatsby-cli, and with that I was able to develop my site locally. I also learned more about structure of websites, technologies like graphQL better.

The site is mainly build for whomever is interested to see my work and my information in a casual fashion, without the certain knowledge needed for platforms like github. As I have applied for a few internship/research programs, it seems that personal website is always one of the bonus points thought not required. Without the limitation of github and linkedin interface, personal website is easier to customize with a personal style. In the case of my website, it is a single page portfolio, categorized into six sections: about me, portfolio experience, tech, education, honors&awards. The hero page has links to github, linkedin, and youtube. It is easy to navigate.

The design of my site is inspired ideas from some readings we have done this semester and also some other online portfolio sites. The readings on Hosting on Netlify, Quick Start with Hugo, and Acquiring a domain name are very helpful on the implementation for programmers like me who are not necessarily familiar with web development. Also the readings from earlier this semester like Tell good stories help me to form a developer narrative, which also aligns with the site narrative. I think one of the strengths in my site is the hero page with the photos I took and the dynamic texts. Even though I'm still working on coming up with a better idea for the hero text, it should serve the need at this point.
