I will look into this. I think I will add some default sorting profiles into
the tool and add a new configuration parameter to select between them (unless
the custom sort order file is used).

That's a good idea. For the sort profiles based on Maven Model, you could name
them "maven-2" and "maven-3".

Still working on it.
I have been preparing the code for a new configuration parameter. Made some
refactoring and added tests to make sure that the new functionality will not
break something else.

The implementation is done. I have changed to the sort order that was suggested
in the documentation, but more importantly I have added predefined sort orders
to the plugin.
Please checkout the source and try the plugin for yourself. Compile with
mvn clean install -Ddev
and run the plugin with
mvn com.google.code.sortpom:maven-sortpom-plugin:1.0.0-SNAPSHOT:sort
I do recommend the predefined sort order called "custom_1" (the one I use
myself)
mvn com.google.code.sortpom:maven-sortpom-plugin:1.0.0-SNAPSHOT:sort
-Dsort.predefinedSortOrder="custom_1"
