mania's Issues

Photo Upload Page

  1. Replace current text with: "You can now upload your photos! As stated on the homepage, this is a study for recognizing mania in the eyes, but you can also upload images of your eyes when depressed or stable. Once the photo is uploaded, an Uploaded Image Survey will appear where you can specify the mental state in the photo as well as whether a flash was used.”

  2. After someone uploads a photo, please change the text to:
"Success! Please adjust the crop box so that it captures both eyes."

Photo Upload Page - add text

Please add:

You can now upload your photos! As stated on the homepage, this is a study for recognizing mania in the eyes. Along with uploading your mania pictures, you can also upload images of your eyes when depressed or stable. Once you upload an image, you will check the following box to let us know your mood during the photo.

Questionnaire Text Edits

Under Medications section:
Add one more option: "ADD/ADHD medications"

Under Substances section:

  • Change "Meth amphetamine" to "Meth"
  • Change "Opioids" to "Opioids (such as vicodin, oxycontin, heroin)"
  • Change "Hallucinogenics" to "Hallucinogenics (such as LSD or magic mushrooms)"

FAQ Page Edits

  1. For the question "How will my photos be used?"
REPLACE text answer with: “Accepted photographs will be used as data for a developing an algorithm that recognizes patterns in pixels in order to ultimately determine whether an image shows signs of mania or not, with as much accuracy as possible. An algorithm is a process or set of rules to be followed in calculations or other problem solving operations, especially by a computer. The algorithm the research team develops can potentially be applied as a computer or mobile application designed to help a person, caregiver or healthcare professional recognize a manic episode.”

  2. For the question "Can I submit a photo where I used flash on my camera?"
Current text: “When you upload the picture, there will be a box that you can check to let us know that the flash was used in the picture.”
REPLACE WITH: “After you upload a picture, there will be a box that you can check to let us know that the flash was used in the picture.”

  3. ADD Question: "I just tried to upload a photo but was brought back to the Homepage instead, what happened?"
Answer (ADD): "If you leave your browser idle for 15 minutes or longer, you are automatically logged out due to inactivity. As a result, your uploaded photo did not make it into our system. Please log in again to upload the photo."

Possible issue

Not sure if you can fix anything for this but Jean mentioned that the first dropdown of Age has a bit of a lag. Might be a user-specific problem but good for us to note.

Questionnaire Page Edits

Move "Mental State Questionnaire" down a bit more from where it says "When you check the mania option..."

Add (hline?) between each question.

Instead of "Other Information", just have the Question "Was a flash used in this photo?" with no line and make answers (yes, no, I don't know) closer space-wise.

Cropping Error

From Manjula:
When I crop one area, the code crops a different area of the image.

Change time from 5 minutes to 15 minutes before automatically logging a user out.

IF you can figure it out- popup that says something like "You are about to be logged out due to inactivity" when the time limit is about to be reached.

Text changes

Home page
Typo: self-regulate their mood

Oxford comma: focus problems, and

Difficult to parse: Mania is a difficult to treat mood swing due to the lack of insight inherent in the episode.
Should say: Manic episodes are difficult to manage because, for many people, there is an inherent lack of insight into what signifies the beginning and end of the episode and physiological triggers are sometimes hard to be aware of immediately.

Separated thought: Pointing out physical changes to the body removes stigma and reinforces the idea that bipolar disorder is a physical illness and not an emotional problem.
Should read: Pointing out physical changes to the body reinforces the idea that bipolar disorder has physiological underpinnings and removes the stigma that bipolar is "simply an emotional problem."

Run on sentence: The research team will then use this information to create an algorithm (think a code to create an app) to determine if an image is classified as manic or not so that this process can become computerized and used by people with bipolar disorder, caregivers and healthcare professionals to determine when individuals with bipolar disorder are experiencing manic episodes.
Should read: The research team will then use this information to create an algorithm (think of this like creating an app) to determine if eyes in an image can be automatically classified as manic or not. If the algorithm can identify mania in the eyes, mania identification can become computerized and used by people with bipolar disorder, caregivers, and healthcare professionals to determine when individuals with bipolar disorder are experiencing manic episodes.

Claim bias: The ultimate goal is to show that bipolar disorder mania is part of an illness that can be measured by physical characteristics.
Should say: The ultimate goal is to determine if mania in bipolar disorder is part of an illness that can be measured by physical characteristics.

Remove this line: This is a secure website hosted on the encrypted SMU servers.

FAQ Page Edit

Add a space between the link to "Photograph Checklist" and the next word.

Add to section

To the section "How you can help", please add the paragraph in quotes below:
How you can help
If you have bipolar disorder, we need your photos! Our goal is to create a database of 1000 photos of the eyes of people in a manic episode. This will help us produce results that provide evidence demonstrating our hypothesis that a manic episode is a physically measurable symptom of a physical illness. If you are a loved one of a person with bipolar disorder, we do want your help. (ADD THE PARAGRAPH ABOVE HERE) Please note: you will need the permission of the person in the picture in order to upload the photos.

Paragraph to add:
"Please know that pictures of eyes when you are in a hypomanic episodes are definitely accepted. Mania is mania. Hypomanic just means it is a milder form of mania as compared to full blown mania. Bipolar two has hypomania. Bipolar one has hypomania and full blown mania. There are two different types of mania: euphoric and dysphoric. We are looking for pictures of all levels and types of mania."

Homepage Text Edits

  1. Under 'How you can help' --> Change to "How you can Help"
    Replace the THIRD sentence:
Current text: “This will help us produce results backed by visible evidence in order to prove our hypothesis that a manic episode is a physically measurable symptom of a physical illness.”
REPLACE WITH: “This will help us produce results that provide evidence demonstrating our hypothesis that a manic episode is a physically measurable symptom of a physical illness.”

  2. Under 'Submitting Your Photos is Simple'
    4th sentence from the bottom:
Current text: “Please note there is also a place for you to upload photographs from a depression episode or when you were stable.”
REPLACE WITH: “Please note you can also upload photos from a depression episode or when you were stable.”

Multiple upload

If you quickly press the "select file" button on the image upload screen, after hitting crop and upload, the upload menu still pops up (so its like uploading multiple images at once, but with one set of meta data). Unsure of what happens with the uploaded images behind the scenes.

Exit Survey Page

  1. Change Title from Exit Survey to "Uploaded Image Survey"
  2. Add this text:

Formatting on survey, not what I wanted

There are lines between multiple choices of the same question. There should only be lines between the separate questions. The format on this page is not what I was talking about. Let's talk in person so that you know what I meant.

Today when I try it, it is back to normal and I don't observe what's in the images above.
Just wanted to point this out as Julie brought it to my attention and then when I tried it, I saw exactly what she was talking about.
