Osdev Notes

A collection of notes, organised as a book, intended to guide a reader through the steps of building an operating system kernel from scratch. Written while writing (and re-writing) our own kernels, each chapter covers a step from selecting a bootloader to running a loaded ELF in userspace.

Currently these notes are a work in progress, but many chapters are functionally complete and available to read below. We'll keep updating old chapters and adding new ones over time so be sure to check back occasionally.

We hope you enjoy, and find something interesting here!

Hey I just noticed this error in the README, great notes by the way!

the document about gnu makefiles has a tiny (but significant) mistake

the document claims GNU make looks for GNUMakefile (uppercase M), its actually GNUmakefile (lowercase m)

$ touch GNUMakefile
$ make
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found.  Stop.
$ touch GNUmakefile
$ make
make: *** No targets.  Stop.

Hey, cool repo, have you considered making a gh-pages for it?

You got a good collection of .md files that could be directly implemented into a static site with jekyll. I thought it would be cool for the community to show their notes in a cool way. I have mine here, https://comp6900.github.io/, which is a bit more of a lighthearted 'pseudo course' rn.

I would like to commend you on creating this repository. It has proven useful countless times in helping me to create my Operating System. The notes you have created are amazingly well laid out, detailed and extremely easy-to-read compared to the OSDev Wiki.

I have also taken a look at your Operating System and would like to also applaud you in making it so far.
