Live connections

Hi Didier
What a wonderfull tool you have made :-)
Is it correct, that it does not work in a PBIX connected live to SSAS?

Error opening from saved PBIX file: "A pbix file couldn't be found"

Hello,

After installing and trying to open the external tool from Power BI Desktop, I got this error. Would a portable version fix?

Thanks

"A pbix file couldn't be found. May be you didn't save your report. Power BI Sidetools will run with limited features. If you want full features, just close Sidetools, save your report and run it again."

External Tools Manager loads at top left overlapping taskbar if you have it loaded at top

I'm one of the rare users that uses my Win taskbar at the top instead of the bottom. Since the External tools manager loads at the Y:0 coordinate I assume it the taskbar is overlapping the top of the External tools window. The only way to move it is by right clicking the icon and selecting move from the taskbar which can be confusing to some. If possible is there a way you can have it detect the location of the taskbar and prevent it from loading behind it.

PBI to files - Default folder

Hello,

I tried to change the default saved folder and restarted everything but it did not work.
I would like to point it to my Git repository that looks like this:
Git \ Reports \ Report A \ M & DAX Files
Git \ Reports \ Report B \ M & DAX Files

Add the Git\Reports path to PowerBI SideTools that would then create the Report A/Report B folders for each report with the M & DAX files within.

GUID extension added to folder name

I can't figure out why this happens but sometimes when you launch SideTools there is an extension (GUID I assume) added to the folders name. After that you can't execute an action like "pbi to files". I highlight the middle out since I don't know if there is any information in it.

Measures saved under a calculated table are not exported to files

HI!

Just found a quick bug.

We have created a dummy calculated table and stored our measures under this table. When exporting measures and calculated tables to files, the calculated table shows with CT but the measures saved under this calculated table don't get exported.

Cheers,
Benoit.

Only 2 empty folders created when exporting to file

Hi!

When trying to export my (big = 700MB) model to files, only 2 root folders get created, the M and the DAX ones, and then only 1 subfolder is created under M, QG_ Diagnostics. And none of those folders contains any file.

Would there be a way to know why it is failing?

Here is the log:

Power BI Sidetools

Hi,

Thank you for producing a wonderful tool.

Unfortunately I am unable to get the DAX debugger working, am I missing something?

Kind Regards
David

PowerBI Cleaner - Unexpected character encountered

Every time I try to use the PowerBI Cleaner it results in an error. Below is the log file:

Sidetools does not work when projects folder is pointed to within my Documents folder in OneDrive

By default, the projects folder is in C:\Users\user\Documents\Power BI Sidetools. However, my Documents folder is not at this location, but is in my OneDrvie instead (C:\Users\user\OneDrive - organization name\Documents). When I change the project folder to be within this folder, Sidetools no longer works - at all. The directory name is only 82 characters long, so that does not seem to be the issue and I was able to use a project folder in another location with a space in the name, so that does not seem to be the issue either. I will use it in the default folder for now, but would much rather have it in my OneDrive folder.

After running 'PBI to files' none of the files were populated

After running 'PBI to files' none of the files were populated and the log reported this error:

Custom Installation Path not working

Hello,

Thank you for your app, it will be very useful to export the M/DAX code to VSCode and Git.
I changed the default installation path (_C:\Program Files (x86)\The BI Power\Power BI Sidetools_) but then PowerBI Sidetools is not working in PowerBI - see picture.
I made it work after reinstalling with the default path.

PB SideTools

No connection through External Tools button

With some reports I can't establish a connection by using the external tool button. Those reports do not include M or DAX code if that matters. I can establish a connection with other reports open beside it at the same time.

I have used the workaround of typing into search "sidetools" and run the app from there, that has worked for me.

Below are screenshots of how I experience the problem:

When I use the External Tools button:
no_connection

When I launch the app through search
run_search

Then I get the connection like this
succ_connection

Not responding, results in crash for v1.2.7 (test)

I tried out the latest test version 1.2.7 on 21. September

I got a none responding when I launched it ( I had another PBI desktop instance running that I didn't notice, before I installed the new version). After giving not responding some time I tried to exit the Power Bi desktop and when the application finally shut down --> all my apps and local files had vanished...

Really strange behaviour and I can't 100% confirm that it was Sidetools fault, but it looks like it. I don't have running computer at the moment because of this and just wanted to give you an update and maybe get your thoughts on why this could happen ?

PowerBI december version

I think the evolution of Power BI Desktop is causing some troubles in the ability to take back the dax and M code.

PBI to files when PBI is saved, constantly refreshes

When the option "PBI to files when PBI is saved" is used it constantly executes and creates the files again. I have the folder structure open and I see the files disappear and show again in intervals of few seconds without me doing any action.

Only thing I have changed is the path to where I save the files, seems to me that this triggers this constant refresh. I have the folder with a dummy name on the same level as the .pbix.

Auto-update feature in version 1.2.6 incorrectly identifies current version

After installing version 1.2.6 and launching it from the External Tools menu, it pops up a dialog box telling me the installed version is out of date, and asks if I want to update. It seems to be identifying itself as version 1.2.0 rather than 1.2.6. I double-checked the version number in the About tab, and it is indeed 1.2.6, though there is an extra ".0" on the end, so maybe that has something to do with it.

VS Code not detected

Where or how do I have to install VS Code to be detected?

So, if I launch manually the executable, it works fine, but, the link from ribbon is not able to launch the executable (to locate it)

Upgrading to Portable version

I have just upgraded to portable version.
Excel files created using Export to Excel now save to a different sub-folder.
Is it possible for PowerBI Sidetools to retrieve Excel files created in previous version of Sidetools (those saved to C:\Users\your username\Documents\ ...) and so update their contents, or do I need to re-create from first principles?
Thanks
Bob
