It works if you use the full suit names in checkDMH:

if rank[i] == '8' and suit[i] == 'Spades': DMH[0] = 1
if rank[i] == '8' and suit[i] == 'Clubs': DMH[1] = 1
if rank[i] == 'A' and suit[i] == 'Spades': DMH[2] = 1
if rank[i] == 'A' and suit[i] == 'Clubs': DMH[3] = 1
if rank[i] == 'J' and suit[i] == 'Diamonds': DMH[4] = 1
