QUESTION:

Is it ok to hardcode the last field in the CSV file to always be "12345678"? ( I think so since you seem to be using the ID and the title field only i.e. row[0] and row[2] only
e.g. not sure if you know ruby but I bet it's pretty clear what this does

i.e. line 76 of http://gist.github.com/369068 csv_file.puts "#{id},\"1\",#{title},12345678"

DETAILS

I did the lazy thing :-) which is generate the CSV Thunderbird data from Get Satisfaction's Thunderbird data in Ruby since I know Ruby and not Python. Then I ran your python script on the CSV Thunderbird data.

Here's what I did:

1. ran my ruby script, gettopics.rb, http://gist.github.com/369068 to get the data and output a Thunderbird CSV file:
   ./gettopics.rb 2010 04 12 2010 04 18 2>gettopics.20100412.20100418.stderr >gettopics.20100412.20100418.stdout
   which created this CSV file: http://gist.github.com/369069

2. ran your python script on the CSV file:
   python ./group_issues.py ../../GS_RUBY/gettopics.20100412.20100418.csv

3. and then this was the output:
