maps's Introduction

Maps

Repository for all spatial data.

For details go to our project site at http://projects.datameet.org/maps/

Note on Format

This Repository contains Geospatial Data in Shapefile Format, which is the defacto format for most GIS software.

In case you want this data in GeoJSON or KML, or any one of the myrid Vector formats, you could use Gdal's ogr2ogr tool to convert these shapefiles to your prefered format. This can be done by the following commands:

ogr2ogr -f GeoJSON <output name>.geojson <input name>.shp &

ogr2ogr -f KML <output name>.kml <input name>.shp &

ogr2ogr -f LIBKML <output name>.kmz <input name>.shp

If you wish to convert these files using an Online too, you could look at: MapSharper; Do remeber to Zip up all the Files (*.shp, *.dbf, *.shx, *.prj) and import that into MapSharper. That way, you will get all attributes in the converted file.

Data License

Unless explicitly stated, all datasets in this repository is shared under CC BY 4.0 license. Please mention and link to relevant dataset in the attribution, eg. India boundaries by DataMeet India community (CC BY 4.0)

maps's Issues

Certain Assembly Segments are missing

Certain Assembly Segments are missing in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
Could you please update the same.

Also, the names and boundaries of the Districts are outdated, which requires an update also.
Thanks.

Tamil Nadu District Maps Request

I'm updating 2019/ 2020 district boundaries of Tamil Nadu. The last split am working on is Kancheepuram/ Chengalpattu. I found a map here: https://cdn.s3waas.gov.in/s31543843a4723ed2ab08e18053ae6dc5b/uploads/2018/06/2018060830.pdf

and a document here: https://cms.tn.gov.in/sites/default/files/go/revenue_e_428_2019.pdf

But was wondering if anyone knows where to locate a better map of the actual district boundaries for 2019/ 2020. Also, Chennai absorbed several districts so I would like to properly account for that. Any help would be greatly appreciated. @thejeshgn @devdattaT @planemad @geohacker @NishaT

Extension request - Pre-2008 Constituencies?

Thank you all for this amazing project! Truly this is remarkable!

I don't know if this is possible, but it would be enormously useful for researchers looking at longer-term political trends if we could put together maps of the Pre-2008 Parliamentary and Assembly Constituencies. as laid out by the Delimitation Commission of 1973. I'm not even sure where to start with this, and I'm sure it would be a huge undertaking, but if it could be done, it would extend the metaphorical horizon for analysis of voting patterns all the way back to the Emergency.

Is this a possible future extension of this work?

Gurugram Ward Shapefiles

Hi all

We're looking for shapefiles of municipal wards in Gurugram. Could you guide us to a source?

In case there is no ready source available, could you guide us on the process by which this is done?

Request for a detailed repo structure

The suggestion is to have a more detailed folder structure or attributes for the maps here.

Suggested attributes:
Admin level, name of largest admin level, year of data, boundary code.

  • Admin level is 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6...(0 country, 1 state, 2, district, 3 taluka, 4 village, 5 ward, 6+ assembly/parliamentary constituencies etc)
  • Name of largest admin level: If it is just a state or district map, then we would need to know the name of that
  • year of data- self explanatory
  • boundary code- which boundary does it follow (explanation below)

Reasons:

  • There are tons of requests for boundaries of different admin levels all the time in Datameet google group, and the data gets unorganized
-Ward Boundaries may get updated during non census years. Ahmedabad itself has had 2 updates since last census- from 64 wards to 57 to 48 wards.
  • District boundaries get updated during non census years
    https://blog.socialcops.com/intelligence/data-stories/boundary-changes-districts-in-india/
According to this, 44 new districts have been created since the last census (2011) for 12 different states.
-Boundaries are not the same in all maps

Example:
Recently, I needed a district level map of Gujarat for a publication. Gujarat's districts had been updated in 2013, but the ones here showed 2011. I found some district maps from other sources, but they were wrong. Finally, someone had nearly accurate maps on the group, and I used them for this.

This is why I believe it is important to have state and district level maps organised by district/state as well as year.

Similarly, if we know which boundary a state or district map follows (GADM, OSM, Natural earth etc) then comparing data between two geographical entities would be easier. This is more for the visualization purpose

For example, if I want to compare 3 states on district wise population density and show that on a larger map of India, I need to make sure that all 3 district maps follow the same boundary/map source.

Create a page to document spatial data resources for India

Requesting spatial data is one of the most common threads on the datameet group. In many cases it looks like readers are not aware of existing resources where they can find data.

Old SOI index map shapefile projections seem wrong.

Both the old and new SOI projection files are in wgs84 and look like they match. This seems off to me.

Support for JK/Telangana

Is JK/Telanga state included in the shapefile?
Is there any plan to include the support if not added already.

Geometry polygons consists of latitude and longitude?

Sorry if this is very basic, but I am new to geo data. I am trying to write a code in geopandas to determine if a given point lies inside a constituency. I am using google maps to determine the latitude and longitude of a certain place.

shp_data = GeoDataFrame.from_file('/maps/assembly-constituencies/India_AC.shp')
ind = shp_data['geometry']
point_hn = Point(77.106281, 28.627625)

for consti in ind:
    if consti.boundary.contains(point_hn):
        print('True')
    else:
        print('False')

Right now it is showing False for every boundary. I also checked for single constituencies with known places and also corrected for number of digits after the decimal place.
I want to know if the numbers in the geometry of the shp file are really latitude and longitudes.

Old District Data [Tripura]

Describe the bug
The district data of Tripura is old.

Expected behaviour
8 districts are there in Tripura. Instead of 4, those 8 districts should be shown.
The name of the 8 districts are:

  1. Dhalai
  2. Gomati
  3. Khowai
  4. North Tripura
  5. Sipahijala
  6. South Tripura
  7. Unokoti
  8. West Tripura

Add repo LICENSE.md

In addition to licensing the data #56, we should add a repository LICENSE.md for the code that is mostly applicable to the website content and any processing scripts in future if any

Proposing that we adopt a simple MIT license, unless there are other opinions.

AC_HNAME

The DBF files have a column called AC_HNAME. Is it the Hindi name of the constituency, etc.? How do I read the information, what font has been used?

New Gujarat districts are missing & Surat constituencies are clubbed into one

Gujarat has 7 new districts which are missing from the maps - Aravalli, Gir Somnath, Botad, Chhota Udepur, Mahisagar, Morbi and Devbhoomi Dwarka.
Also Surat actually has a lot of constituencies but in the geo-coordinates they are all clubbed under "surat east" and other are just missing - Katargam, Surat West, Varachha Road, Karanj, Surat North, Udhana, Olpad etc.

Shapefiles for Ladakh and J&K boundries

Hey team,

I am working on a spatial analysis of ID in India, and have been suggested to apply the new J&K and Ladakh boundaries instead of keeping them together. Can you suggest how to do so using the shapefiles already present? I considered combining the geometries at a district level, but it does not have the level of detail (geometry for gilgit and other districts) that the GoI used to define the new UTs. Is there an external dataset I can use to fix this?

Thanks!
Dev

The boundary lines seem to be a little off.

Hi folks, you guys have done a great job with the maps but the boundary lines do not seem to match when put them on top of google maps. All the administrative boundaries seem to be a little off. The district boundaries might have changed but they should at least line up with the state boundaries on google. And I have compared the dist_2011 maps with other maps available online (not 2011 maps) like the GADM and maps available on IPUMS International website, they seem to be more accurate for whichever year they are mapped for.
Could you let me know the methods used to create this map.

State level borders with Ladakh

Looking for a India State boundary with Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir UTs marked. I need a shape file. Any pointers? Is anyone working on digitizing?

Add official country and state boundaries of India from Survey of India

The Survey of India has made the shapefiles of the official borders available on their online portal https://indiamaps.gov.in/soiapp/

Shapefiles:
https://indiamaps.gov.in/SOIApp/downloadLayer/IndiaBoundary.zip
https://indiamaps.gov.in/SOIApp/downloadLayer/StateBoundary.zip

Visually checked them and they look quite accurate except for some issues along the coastline. This can be used to replace some of the existing shapefiles in the repository.

Wrong District names

Many of the names of district in the shapefile are wrong. For example, Ahmednagar is Ahmadnagar, Ahmedabad is Ahmadabad, and similar

Missmath in State boundary

it is to bring in notice that the state boundary provided in indian shape file is wrong please do check the Telangana & Andrapradesh Boundary where both state should cut Chattisgarh state, but as provided it is not please do rectify it

License data with `CC-by 4.0` to be compatible with Government Open Data License

Most datasets in this repo is CC-by-sa 2.5 which makes it hard to practically use since it forces downstream use to be relicensed. Further, CC licenses include scope for data only from v4.0.

Proposing that we drop the share alike clause and adopt CC-by 4.0.

The primary goal of this would be to ensure DataMeet datasets can be mixed with the following datasets without additional restrictions:

Why drop the share alike clause?

The share alike condition requires CC-by-sa data sets mixed with more open GODL licensed datasets to become CC-by-SA. Thus using datameet data results in more restrictive data. To maximize interoperability, we should drop this restriction http://opendatahandbook.org/guide/en/what-is-open-data/

Most open data portals including data.gov.in have only a -by attribution requirement and does not force relicensing https://wiki.creativecommons.org/wiki/Data_and_CC_licenses

ECI's Polling Stations locations website doesn't allow to copy and distribute

Hi,
Thanks for your effort and the amazing work!

I have been thru the DataMeet Google Groups thread (link) and it seems ECI's Polling Station Locations website doesn't allow to copy and distribute data on that website!

Did DataMeet obtain permission/license from ECI regarding the same? Can you point me to it?

Some missing shapes

I checked districts which are only 641 districts instead of 720 districts currently in India.
State of new Andhra Pradesh and Telengana is also missing
UTs J&K and Ladakh is also mission

One or more features has an invalid polygon. Please correct the vector polygon file and submit the request again.

Hello, I am the data for my research purpose. I have used the 4 files in the Survey-of-India-Index-Maps folder which has the Boundaries folder which contains four files India-States .dbf,.prj,.shp,.shx files. I have uploaded these 4 files in zip file. Now, when I upload a zip file to a website, there is an issue: one or more features have an invalid polygon. Please correct the vector polygon file and submit the request again. Kindly help me in this regard as I am doing my academics project on this data.

Descrepancies in District and Assembly Constituencies boundaries

Hi,

I am hoping to superimpose the district shape file on the Assembly Constituencies (ACs) shapefiles. While I understand that ACs are almost never a hundred percent in one district or for that matter have the same boundaries, there seem to be large shift across most AC boundaries. This is especially the case when I merge it with other datasets that use GPS coordinates. I have attached a screenshot (Red is AC and black is district boundaries).
2021-08-08

I know you had mentioned a shift in data, could you elaborate on that?

Also, could you let me know which AC names are entered wrong?

Thanks a lot!

Help regarding STATA import

Hi,

I am trying to load the shp file into STATA s per the guidelines given in the following link
https://www.stata.com/support/faqs/graphics/spmap-and-maps/

in the guideline, we have a command as follows for USA example
shp2dta using s_06se12, database(usdb) coordinates(uscoord) genid(id)

for the above example i need
database (usdb) specified that we wanted the database file to be named usdb.dta.
coordinates (uscoord) specified that we wanted the coordinate file to be named uscoord.dta.
genid(id) specified that we wanted the ID variable created in usdb.dta to be named id

Given the above example for USA, can you guide me how to do it for the India shp ? What are the names given to the database, coordinates and genid in the shp file provided by you?

Thanking you in advance

Regards
Sandeep

Invalid Geometry

I am extremely grateful for the free availability of Assembly and Parliamentary constituency, States and district shapefiles of India. Most operations can be done with them. However, the intersection feature doesn't seem to work since there are invalid geometries. Additional work, for instance with Check Validity option in QGIS or "clgeo_Clean" function of cleangeo package in R seem to validate the files (for instance the geometry validator reports zero errors). However, although the Admin2 works well with intersection after "clgeo_Clean", the parliamentary and assembly constituencies and district files still do not seem to work well with intersection. Has anyone experienced such issues before? Thank you very much!

Missing district for Census_2001

Hi!

I am working with the 2001_Dist.shp file and I noticed that for the "Uttar Pradesh" state it's missing the polygon information of its district "Kanshiram Nagar". It should be the 71st district for this state. Is there a way to add this polygon?

PD: Thanks a lot for this useful repository!
