GPU Issues on Linux - Legion 5 pro - Gen 8

I tried installing multiple Linux distros like Ubuntu, Manjaro, Fedora, and Garuda but all of them are having the same issue with Display flickering, freezing, and crashing completely.

Installed the latest Nvidia proprietary drivers, but still no resolution.

It starts off fine but when I change any display-related settings for example refresh rate or start watching a 4k video on YouTube the issue appears randomly and then the display freezes with multi-color flickering lines and the only option then is to power it off by long pressing the power button.

Detailed Specification:
Lenovo Legion 5 pro Gen 8 (2023) [16ARX8]
Processor: AMD Ryzen™ 7 7745HX
GPU: NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 4060
RAM: 32GB DDR5 5200Mhz

Any help or suggestions for resolving the issue would be greatly appreciated. If it is not the right place to ask the question, please redirect me to the appropriate place.

Fedora 37 almost got it working

I just installed Fedora 37 on my legion, and I am surprised at how much is actually working, but not everything.

I have an older Legion with a 9th gen intel and 2060

Wifi worked instantly

Keyboard brightness also got recognized, but it only shows on and off, nothing in between

Screen brightness is working right out of the box (with one Issue: when lowering it, the screen turns off, but when turning it up again it works as intended, also the slider works perfectly), this was the biggest issue I had in the past

I will experiment further and add to this post

Permission issue for conservation_mode on Fedora 39 KDE Plasma.

If I execute this command:

sudo echo 1 > /sys/bus/platform/drivers/ideapad_acpi/VPC2004*/conservation_mode

I get the error:

warning: An error occurred while redirecting file '/sys/bus/platform/drivers/ideapad_acpi/VPC2004:00/conservation_mode'
open: Permission denied

The following command resolve the issue:

echo 1 | sudo tee /sys/bus/platform/drivers/ideapad_acpi/VPC2004*/conservation_mode

Ubuntu 23 works fine on Legion 16IAX7

Most issues have been resolved; currently, the only remaining problem is the absence of sound.

Ubuntu 24.04 resolves ALL the issues on Legion 16IAX7

Everything works fine out of the box in Ubuntu 24.04 🥳

Laptop Often Won't Wake From Sleep

Posting here to ask other users if they have found a fix, not an issue with the configuration. Every distro I have tried, from just works Distros like Pop!_OS to Arch Linux to now what I am using Fedora 39 I often have problems waking my laptop up from suspend after lid close.

Steps to reproduce:
Close the lid, wait anywhere from 5 seconds to 2 days and re-open the lid.

I would say 80% of the time I have issues with the screen not turning on. Sometimes the Num Lock indicator light turns on, sometimes not. I have tried this on both Wayland (Hyprland) and X11 (GNOME and Budgie). I am quite lost and some help would be grealty appricated.

Tool for custom fan control and power mode

I created a tool for custom fan curves, power modes, and other stuff for Lenovo Legion 5, Legion 7 etc. It is called LenovoLegionLinux and is on github https://github.com/johnfanv2/LenovoLegionLinux. Maybe this is also useful for your list.

Fix Wifi after sleep for Legion 5 Pro

Hello,

On Lenovo Legion 5 Pro with linux 6.5 the wifi controller doesn't work after going in sleep mode.

After some dinging, I found the following tips to get it fix on recent Lenovo laptop: lwfinger/rtw89#275 (comment)

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/rtw8852be.conf

In that file, add the lines
options rtw89_pci disable_aspm_l1=y disable_aspm_l1ss=y
options rtw89pci disable_aspm_l1=y disable_aspm_l1ss=y
options rtw89_core disable_ps_mode=y
options rtw89core disable_ps_mode=y

And that seams to make everything working.
