2018.code4lib.org's Issues

Update site title

Since this is the conf. site I'd suggest changing the site title from:
code4lib - Washington, D.C. 2018
to
code4lib 2018 - Washington, D.C.

take down 2017 prospectus content

When the website was copied from the 2017 version, the prospectus was brought over as is. Please take it down -- there will be some changes for 2018, and we've already got one potential sponsor who has contacted us (which is great, but it's also fortunate that they're interested in a category that hasn't changed).

A thermometer-type display showing how close/far we are from meeting our donation goals.

questions:

  • where does it live? sponsors page? prospectus? home page?!
  • what is the data source? Google Spreadsheets? manually entering into _data/conf.yml?

reception location details

Add details to Adamantium section of sponsors page and venues page. We discussed not adding a ton of text to the Adamantium section, as it's somewhat constrained on space, but maybe the text Jamie Mears sent could fit if other text is removed and a small image is used.

HTML & CSS clean-up

There are a lot of unnecessary classes and and div nesting.

Also, I want to get rid of .cell .cell-lg as bootstrap already has built-in container functionality.

Add conference dates to home page

The conference dates have been set at February 13-16, 2018. LPC would like the website to be updated first then will send out the announcement to the list.

Need to set up 2018.code4lib.org address — Ryan Wick is probably the contact?

Remove Breakfast, Lunch, and Breaks section of the prospectus

Could you please remove the Breakfast, Lunch, and Breaks section of the prospectus as we are not offering these targeted sponsorships this year. Also, could you remove "main reception" under the "targeted sponsorship" section of the prospectus since it appears at the top.

One other change is to change the contributor level to $1000- $1499 and supporter to $999 - $250 (while removing the non-monetary)
Thanks,

Jeffrey
Sponsorship Committee

Keynote Nominations

Email will be sent out Monday, September 18th with a wiki link for filling in nominations.

Preconference info / text contrast with the hero img

We currently show announcements about registration, voting, proposals, etc in 2 places:

  1. The timeline page ./schedule/timeline.html, which is linked to from the "What's going on" button on the homepage
  2. The homepage additionally lists any activities.

One issue is the list on the homepage is difficult to notice due to the background image.

What are people's thoughts? Any ideas, examples for improvements?

Sponsorship Prospectus

To make the prospectus more uniform could we change the Targeted Sponsorship -- Real-time Transcription and Closed Captioning of Talks from "0 available at $2,000" to the more uniform "1 available at $2,000 0 left"?
Thanks.
Sponsorship Committee

Add basic venue information

Per announcement on the list:

The conference will take place in Washington's historic Omni Shoreham Hotelhttps://www.omnihotels.com/hotels/washington-dc-shoreham, just a couple blocks from the Woodley Park metro station, walking distance to the National Zoo and bustling Adams Morgan neighborhood.

The Omni has given us permission to reuse any image from their website on our conference site.

I'm not sure what the timeline is for your restructuring in #51 but if not soon it would be nice to get this information on the website before that happens.

Fill in sponsors info, switch main menu link to sponsors

(assigned to Ben Wallberg, will have to look up his GitHub…)

Copy _data/examples/sponsors.yml and fill in the accurate sponsor information including names, logos (optional), links, and captions. Activate the sponsors menu link by turning call-for-sponsors at the very bottom of _data/conf.yml to false.

See also #4 — we want to display prominent sponsors on the home page once this issue is complete.

Idea for "welcome to washington" section

This popped into my head and wanted to notate it for discussion before I forgot.

In the "Welcome to Washington, D.C." section, perhaps we can provide links to non-conference activities/sites/information relating to the conference location?

should "sponsors" menu link go straight to prospectus for now?

Right now the "sponsors" main menu link feels like a waste—it goes to a mostly empty page where the only action is to click the button to take you to the prospectus. It seems more logical to send people straight to the prospectus at this point.

If that's our course of action, it might be nice to figure out a way to do it with a toggle in _data/conf.yml as opposed to switching the link href and needing to switch it back. Something like searching_for_sponsors: true could make the link point to the prospectus, while as we approach the conference date (and start to fill in the majority of sponsorship slots) we turn off the toggle and revert to the current situation.

New Code of Conduct / Safety section

Content is:

  • code of conduct
  • policies
  • 1st half of accessibility (not the piece on designing an accessible presentation)
  • duty officers
  • emergency resources

Refactor _variables.sccs and main.scss references

_variables.scss has become a bit of a mess, with a mix of bootstrap defaults and our customizations. The naming convention of $primary/secondary/accent don't really apply. Overall needs a clean-up and to have components like speaker-box and menu added

General Info: proposals

Create content in gen info section related to proposals:

  • how to submit any proposal (panels, posters, talks, workshops)
  • list of all proposals (panels, posters, talks, workshops)
  • list of all speakers

New "General Info" section & its content

Per #7 and the results of our card sort, we want to create a new General Info main menu link which encompasses a lot of content. Once we've sorted out the home page content and moved the timeline there, we should tackle this new section.

Some of its content:

  • how to submit any proposal (panels, posters, talks, workshops)
  • list of all proposals (panels, posters, talks, workshops)
  • list of all speakers
  • hotels
  • venues
  • scholarships
  • scholarship recipients

For these pieces of content, we were split on whether they belong under General Info or Conduct/Safety:

  • Accessibility
  • Policies

(just writing this down now, I want to link to the specific content I'm mentioning later…)
