Micro services for open data

What problem does your app or project solve?

The APIs for some of the open data portal being used by upstate cities can be complex and difficult to use. This project would create a set of very simple, tightly-scoped APIs that sit on top of upstate open data portals and make it easier for developers to use them. For example, an API could be built on top of the Syracuse open data portal allowing a consumer to query for property ID by providing an address string.

In addition, these micro services could be used to abstract calls to multiple backend APIs, like a property lookup on a city open data portal and a business license check in the State of NY open data portal.

Who are the users of your app or project?

Application developers and other data consumers. Events like Open Hack and Hack Upstate could be good venues to work with developers to identify use cases for these micro services.

This project would use a variety of data sets already available from city governments and the State of New York.

Syracuse Parcel Viewer - an app to allow city residents to view details about their property via a simple web interface.

What problem does your app or project solve?

Currently, there is no web-based app that allows Syracuse city residents to view details of their property including assessed value, property taxes owed, outstanding violations, property tax exemptions, etc.

Who are the users of your app or project?

City residents and property owners in Syracuse. Anticipate doing user research prior to writing code, and doing testing with user groups as new releases get rolled out.

Details about the dataset you want to use

Plan to use the Syracuse parcel data set, and the trash pick up day data set. There may also be datasets available from the State of New York State data portal that could be used as well.

A service to lookup the designated trash pick up day for a property based on address.

What problem does your app or project solve?

It can be difficult sometimes to know the proper day to bring trash receptacles out for pickup, particularly after a holiday. When trash is brought to the curb too early or too late for scheduled pick up, it can result in unsightly litter in a neighborhood.

Who are the users of your app or project?

This app could be used by citizens - to find out when they should bring their trash receptacles out for scheduled pick up - or by city staff, like service request agent .

Details about the dataset you want to use

The City of Syracuse has a dataset of trash pickup schedules which is searchable by address, and other Upstate cities could also make this data available.
