I vote for removing this functionality. In my opinion:

• The trade off between additional complexity and usefulness to the scope of the CocoaPods command line tool (install dependencies) is not worth it.
• Stargazers count and other similar functionality should be offered by the web services and not by the command line tools.
• The functionality is specific to a commercial platform (GitHub)

@alloy the class is currently semi-broken (see #206), and seeing as it's (almost entirely) unused, we should get rid of it. I'll do so if you give me the 👍.
