csps-with-r

Purpose: introducing beginners to R, RStudio and the Civil Survey People Survey data.

The training is currently a single R Markdown file knitted to HTML. The HTML file will be made available online when the GitHub repo is made open.

Important note on the data

The CSPS data used in this document is not real data. Instead, it's a 'synthetic' version created using the {synthpop} package.

In short, this means that the data distributions within the variables are preserved, but no response represents a real individual. This means we can get some realistic-looking outputs without any response being from a real individual.

Future plans

Longer term, this should be developed into a {bookdown} project that covers far more than just the very basics of using R and RStudio. It should also demonstrate more thorough analysis of the CSPS data, like calculating percent-positive scores.

The book should probably cover some case studies using the {cspstools} package too, as that develops.

Better explanations in plot section

Ahead of workshop on Tues 18 Feb, briefly explain:

  • the grammar of graphics
  • 'building up plots' with +
  • possibilities
  • the power of not having to tweak everything by hand
  • etc

Mention {cspstools}

Ahead of the workshop on Tues 18 Feb, write a short section that introduces the concept of {cspstools} and gathers ideas for functionality from the attendees.

Complete 'get the data set' section

There's a reference to download.file() to fetch the dataset from the internet.

It could fetch the data from this repo. Or, there'll (ideally) be a Binder-enabled repo on GitHub that will also contain the data (for people attending the session who don't have R and RStudio installed).

Should we email the file to people too? What if their computer won't let them download from file from GitHub?

Link out to training resources, including things like cheat sheets for each of the functions. Also include advice on where to get help (RStudio community, etc).
