Markup exercise review

Completion time: 15 minutes.

Package Assignment Review

Hmm is it necessary for students to understand what the code does? Because in that case we need to change this ex. so it asks students to include this package and to run it on some strings. I'm pretty sure they wont follow from just reading the code.
I don't expect anybody to realize that repeat-string needs to be added to the dependencies without running the code for instance.

I also doubt they'll spend 3 hours on reading about package files. Maybe we need to add more steps like: Write code that uses this package. Ah and I've just realized that's what you want them to do with 'Take ± 3 hours to create a project around the below code:'. That needs to be more explicit! I initially thought that just means write the package and readme.

Ok so my proposed steps would be:

  • Create git repo holding the index.js file (hint:git setup source)
  • Write code that uses this package (hint: require)
  • Test the packages different functions
  • Think about what the package does and then write the readme. Commit it
  • Now run npm init and fill out the basic metadata
  • Open up package.json and add important metadata like dependencies, license etc.

Add prerequisite assignments

Prereqs are assignments between the lecture and related lab, needed to successfully partake in labs (think installing git, node, setting up slack, github)

Week 1

  • Sign up for GitHub (plus fill out profile details, see Step A of Run assignment)
  • Install Git
  • Install Linux Bash Shell for Windows (link)

Week 2

  • Install Node

...

Related to GH-2.

Assignment General Remarks

If we want students to consume certain resources, we shouldn't list them under "tips". As the amount of (new) content in this course is overwhelming we can't expect most students will go over the tips section.
I would propose to include any resource we feel is crucial to understanding in the ass(can we switch this term to something that abbreviates better next year? 🍑) itself. For instance if you want students to write their own package.json, they need one single resource that covers this topic well. this resource is now listed under tips (https://docs.npmjs.com/files/package.json). I would include reading it as a step in the exercise.

Markdown is actually more useful than I thought it would be.
It's not just some weird BBcode alternative like I expected.

Anyway,

  1. This website is kind of a scam since there isn't a daily upload schedule.
  2. Making lists doesn't seem to work all the time.
  3. Apparently while making this it automatically makes the line-break, so no need to double-space at the end of a sentence!

I hope we're going to learn about making tables, footnotes and such later.
Here's a nice picture for your trouble.

Of course I added alt-text. That's what I learned in the little course

PS: I'm definitely going to appreciate the 3am deadlines. Those will come in handy for sure.

Ook nietbij man ls. Werkt alleen buiten jouw programma.

Lists:

  1. punt 1
  2. punt 2
  3. punt 3

of

unordered list

  • punt 1
  • punt 3
  • punt 4

Links:

Hello,

My name is Mirza, but some call me Mima.

I like to...

  • sit in the sun, especially right now when the winter season is finally coming to an end
  • read books, but my laptop keeps me too distracted
  • learn and do new things, such as programming or eating a burrito weighing 1.7 kg - dont ask @dandevri knows
  • and of course like many others: watch Netflix

Some shows I recommend are...

  1. Peaky Blinders

Love the style and era of the show.

  1. Black Mirror

The show is exploring some fascinating concepts that one day may become true.

  1. Mr. Robot

Hackerman, do I need to say more?

  1. The Deuce

Great story and excellent cinematography.

  1. Stranger Things

Weird at first. But, again: awesome style and era.

  1. Better Call Saul - you should have watched Breaking Bad first imo

An interesting in-depth look into the character, Saul Goodman, who played in the Breaking Bad series.

  1. Billions

Who doesn't love money.

  1. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

You'll laugh, a lot.

  1. Silicon Valley

A homage to the real Silicon Valley and the culture - in a funny way.

  1. Westworld

Mind-boggling.

Note: these are in no particular order.

How to make an egg

  1. Buy eggs and butter

Go to the neariest store and buy that shit.

  2. Warm up the pan

Just heat the fucker up, man.

  3. Throw butter into the pan.

    Wait a second.

  4. Throw egg into the pan.

    Scramble it!

  5. Throw egg onto a plate.

Serve it up on bread. Put some tomatoes and cucumber, sprankled with salt, on the side.

Something important I want to show you

Octocat assignment

I've finished this assignment! Nice that you can deeplink to include the title of an issue :)
I also started with the octocat one and read the 'Understanding Github Flow article'
Excellent article. Are they going to use pull requests though? Don't remember if they're covered in the tutorial. If they're not, it might be good for them to see an example.

Ah now I see that PRs are covered in this assignment :) So that's solved.

The GH pages tutorial is excellent! It even covers Vim ✚
I do think it's crucial they take the time to get through this tutorial. Id give em an hour to do so. At one point, they have to make their first PR. There are a lot of 'firsts' in this tut.

As there are a lot of things that can go wrong in this exercise, I think it's perfect for showing the value of asking questions in the course slack channel. For instance, even if they don't make ANY typos, they might still forget to accept the invitation from the teacherbot on the collaborative GH repo which results in access being denied 5 steps late rin the tutorial when you try to push.
Also my submission was rejected by travis because my yaml file didn't have a newline at the end of the file. I just copy pasted from the tutorial as requested so I'm guessing lots of people will have this problem and since they dont know how to use/read travis yet they prob wont be able to find and fix this problem on their own.

I think it took me about 30 minutes to do the github pages part alone and I skipped through 60% because I already have a GH pages.
